Pages 1448 'Cutest baby' contestants wanted Secretary resigns from JHS board As part of the Fiesta Days celebration, the McHenry Women's Civic Group will again be sponsoring a "Cu Contest." Trail, itest Baby Residents who think they have the cutest daughter or son in the area, must register the child by June 15. Parents should submit a five by seven inch photo with the baby's name, address, phone number and date of birth. Candidates must be no older than 12 months by July l. There is no entry fee, and only the first 20 entries will be ac­ cepted. Pictures will be returned if not accepted, but only if a self- addressed, stamped envelope is enclosed. ISH noW incorporated, not-for-profit organization By Robert Gordon Plalndealer Herald staff writer FISH of McHenry which added an Inc. to its title in spring, 1984, held its first annual meeting last week., Because it solicited and spent more than $4,000 a year, it became nebessary for the area organization which helps the needy to incorporate as a not- for-profit organization. It is now required to file an annual report with the Internal Revenue Service. "We wanted to make a report to the general public since they are so involved," said FISH representative Bertha Stange. "We discussed what we had done last year." Besides reviewing the budget for 1984-85, those present at the meeting also discussed how some individuals can and have used deception to get unneeded aid, and ways to guard against it. In the past, churches have iven people direct aid. But this ormat has allowed duplicated requests. FISH would like all of the churches in the McHenry area to refer any aid requests to their centralized 24-hour an­ swering service. "We teel tlttffby combining all of our efforts, we'll make it a more efficient way- of handling requests with no duplications," Stange said. Currently members of Catholic parishes St. John's, St. Mary's and St. Patrick's, along with members of First United and Mt. Hope Methodist chur­ ches in McHenry support the FISH organization by having regular food collections. In addition, all of the schools in the community have food drives and civic organizations, businesses and individuals contribute money. All requests for assistance come through the McHenry answering service and are screened before an appointment is made to receive food. "FISH does not have an open door, off the street policy," Stange said. "Food is given out only by appointment, and a record is kept of all individuals and families receiving help." Last year, $30,532 was collected in contributions, and $26,208 of that kitty was spent on needy requests. The total cost of emergency food and food donated by the community was $5,868. Utilities for 36 families added up to $2,891; shelter for 32 families and or individuals cost $3,694; Clothing for 36 individuals cost $1,0441 and prescriptions, travel and other expenses added up to $993 for the year. In addition, $5,000 was spent on clothes for over 250 needy children; $3,000 was spent on Thanksgiving and Christmas gifts and $3,718 was spent on emergency assistance during April and May, as well as business expenses such as postage and newsletters. FISH was organized in 1973, offering local transportation. It gradually grew due to the need for emergency food and a food pantry was organized. Today more than 50 families are helped each month. The pantry is located in the lower level of the First United Methodist Church. By Carol A. Stevens Plalndealer Herald News Service The Board of Education of Johnsburg School District 12 recently received a letter of resignation from James Preston, who currently holds the position of secretary of the board. The resignation will be effective May 14, at which time the board will announce his successor. Preston has served on the board for over 12 years. In other board business, a planned field trip to Epcot Center i#Florida was approved. The trip was orginally intended for students in the gifted program but was opened up to any students who wished to attend since only one gifted student signed up for the trip. Kris Simons, the teacher who will be acting as chaperone, has been asked to prepare special assignments for the gifted student so that the ̂ rip will be an extra learning experience for that person. The request came from the student's parents. The board also reviewed a new career planner which will be used in the high school to assist students with their career choices. It is an extensive booklet which helps the students decide where their interests are, what careers interest them and to which they will be suited, and guides them on the path of at­ tending their goals. Booklet designer Dennis Spraetz, who is also a coun­ sellor, indicated that the booklet fits well with the high school's goal of helping students prepare for life. The booklet is designed to be used by any student whether college-bound or one who is looking to enter the job market directly after graduation. The booklet will be used by juniors or last quarter sophomores.
