"Those are all very frustrating things to me," he said. "The Bi ble, for Instance. That's His book, His word, and I can't read it." Krumweide says he bought his first driving license, but had the written test read to him when he % had the license renewed. He doesn't havej problem behind the wheel, at least not when he's in familiar territory.- "Once I get out-of-state, 1 have some trouble. Stop, no passing/ the common ones 1 can read, because I've seen them so much. But signs about construction, I can't read. "I was real embarrassed once. I was driving for somebody into Chicago to drop something off at a hospital. I got confused as to which street I was on, and I had to ask somebody where the hospital was. HTpQinted, and it was right across the stpet." W h a t w s m o s t a t Krumweide about his affliction is a fundamental fact of life for a parent. "When I'm older," he says, "I'll never be able to say I read my kids a bedtime story. That's a very emotional thing for me." Krumweide's schooling career is a checkered one. He advanced through the seventh grade, but ad mits it's preposterous he made it past the first. He was held back three times between the first and fourth grade, but then was passed from then on, not even being able to read his report card. "I blame the teachers," he says now with a tinge of anger in his voice. "I blame the school for not seeing something was wrong, for not trying to help me." Krumweide began his schooling in a small school in Lilymoor, and then went on to Edgebrook and McHenry Junior High Schools. "A lot of people thought I was retarded, but I wasn't. When I was younger, that was what everyone thought was wrong with me. I just didn't catch on to reading. I don't really know what it was. I dropped out after seventh grade. I was 16 yearsold." Krumweide received good grades in arts and crafts class, and gym, and math, but in English, literature and other related subjects, he failed. "They just slid me right along," he recalls of his instructors. "It angers me more now than it did then. My parents were quite upset, too. They (the teachers) knew I couldn't read, but they'd just make me do more drawing of this and that. The principal asted me to plant the trees in front of tne junior high, and I did that, too. But I never could read. I've accepted that." Krumweide then ended his scholastic career and moved on, working at a variety of jobs, skip* ping from one to another, until he settled inv detailing cars at a McHenry auto dealer when he was about 20 years old. Upon his father's death two years ago, Krumweide was trying to straighten out his dad's records. When the attorney in volved with the estate asked Craig to read something over, Craig told him,'I can't.' As Krumweide says: "They put the backbone in ya." Krumweide took the organization's help, and last fall enrolled in a course at McHenry County College? where he has been learning to read from a tutor. "It's a good program. I started with little words, like 'a,' 'the,4' 'that.' There's about 250 or so words that I'm supposed to learn. So far, I know about 90. "It was pretty neat once I started to catch on," Krumweide said. "Words I've always used, now I know^vhat they look like." Krumweide enlists the help of his family, especially his wife of 16 years, Brenda, in his studies. - "She tries to help me with my homework, but sometimes I'll*see a word, and I'll want to know how to sound it out, and she can^ ex plain it. And meanings. .Why do some words have two different meanings? And why are some words spelled alike and mean dif ferent things? She reads to me quite a bit. It's never really been hard for her." Krumweide says when he and Brenda first began to date, he told her of his problem. "I told her I was willing to bow out if my not being able to read was a problem. But she said it wasn't, and it hasn't been." It boggles the mind to think of instances where Krumweide -- and others like him -- will run into a problem unencountered by peo ple who can read. "I've always been fascinated with planets and astronauts and stuff. Sometimes I'll see a book about outer space, and I'll want to pick it up and read it. It's very frustrating." Krumweide is in the process of expanding his own auto detailing business. He already has his share of loyal customers from his early days at various car dealers in McHenry. Basically, he has tired of seeking employment. "If someohe asks me to fill out an application, I have to ask for help. Some are helpful, some give me the runaround. But some peo ple just won't hire you if you can't read. I put pride in my work. It doesn't matter if I can read or not. "And I have nothing against Mexicans or Latinos, either. But they're working in factories, and some can't even speak English. I know I'm capable, but some peo ple don't see it that way. "I wish that those who do the hiring would look at the person. to do things before saying 'no.'" Krumweide does have a goal, which may seem a lofty one for so meone currently at a first-grade reading level. "I'd like to get my high school diploma. If I could read at about a freshman or so level, I could do it. It's something I've always wanted, something I have a drive for." In a sense, Craig Krumweide has seen the writing on the wall. And been able to read it. A preliminary hearing on two reckless homicide charges against Ronald D. Snell, 25, of Crystal Lake, has been set for Monday, May 20 in 19th Judicial Circuit Court.
