It also ushered in a new musical era. Bill Haley and the Comets' "Rock Around the Clock," commonly cred ited with opening the rock era, had been released six months prior to "Blackboard Jungle" and had gone nowhere. It got its second chance when it was played with the opening credits, and went on to become the anthem of an era. "Blackboard Jungle" effectively captured the mood of a troubled urban school -- from the cynical and apathetic teachers, to the jaded and unreachable students. And although the idealistic teacher was finally allowed some modest success, "Blackboard Jungle" avoided the magic transformation -- com mon to this genre -- when the teacher "breaks through." Under the helm of Richard Brooks, Clenn Ford gave an effective performance as the idealistic teach er; Anne Francis played his pregnant wife; Richard Kiley played his well-meaning but ineffectual col league (whose valuable jazz collection is destroyed by the young hoodlums); Sidney Poitier was a possibly salvageable student; and Vic Morrow was the knife- wielding thug. Question: What well-known director played one of the delinquents in "Blackboard Jungle"I Aifsjnzew lnpd -'J^MSuy C 1985 CompuiGfl „ . «• t \ » 1 H "
