FRIDAV MAt 17.1983 NIMC offers bereavement program The death of a friend or family member calls forth powerful emotions - feelings which af fect everyone in several ways. Death also changes relation ships within families and the way a family functions. Studies show that individuals and families who have knowledge of their grieving and recovery needs, and who have adequate sharing and support during the adjustment period after bereavement, make more satisfying adjustments/ to bereavement than those who do not have the advantages. The Department of Pastoral Care at Northern Illinois Medical Center is offering a Bereavement Program for all persons in its patient service area, to assist them with facts and personal support in the special time around the death of a loved one. Members of the medical center staff - chaplains, social workers, and medical staff - will offer their assistance to those who come to the Bereavement Program, and other area professionals will be called upon at the request of participants. Assistance resources of many kinds are available to widows, widowers, children, parents, families and friends who have experienced the death of a loved one, and information on the resources will be provided. The Bereavement Program is held on Tuesday evenings at the medical center (Route 31 and Bull Valley Road, McHenry) from 7:30 to 9 p.m. The topic will include: coping with grief and loss; understanding changes in the family; church life and bereavement; sources of personal support; handling your feelings and those of others. Those wishing to par ticipate should plan on attending a minimum of four sessions, and should call the medical center in advance. To attend, call (815) 344-5000, and ask to register for the Tuesday Night Program in Bereavement. Historic Society slates program * on preservation The McHenry County Historical Society has scheduled a free program that should be of interest to anyone wanting to know about historic preser vation as it applies to private residences, commercial real estate and municipal properties. , On Saturday, May 18, at 2 p.m., Michael Ward, coor dinator of the Historic Preservation Program for the State of Illinois, will present a program at the . McHenry Township Office located north of McHenry on Route 31 at 3703 N. Richmond Road. 'Convert' a friend to the recycling habit "Did you know that, according to a study made recently by a waste management firm, only about eight to 10 percent of McHenry County's waste is c u r r e n t l y b e i n g recycled ?' 'queried a McHenry County Defender spokesman. They would like to appeal to all regular recyclers to "convert" a neighbor or friend to the recycling habit. "Instead of just worrying about landfills being placed close to your home, why not decrease the need for them through recycling," they urge. Each month, on the first and third Saturdays, the Defenders hold recycling drives in the parking lot of McHenry Com munity High School West Campus, 4724 W. Crystal Lake Rd., McHenry. The drives are held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. On Saturday, May 18, the McHenry Area Jaycees will co- sponsor the recycling drive. Participants can help the organizations by bringing any of the following items: newspapers with no magazines or junk mail included, used motor oil, "tin" cans rinsed and flattened, glass containers with all plastic and metal removed, aluminum scrap of all kinds, and brown paper bags and cardboard in manageable bundles. The Defenders will also purchase 100 percent aluminum cans, paying the current market price. A bonus of two cents per pound will be paid if the cans are crushed and a second bonus of two cents per pound for lots of more than 100 pounds. For additional information, contact a Defender represen tative at 385-8512.
