Hebron police reward polite drivers By Laurie Brady PlatodMler Herald N«w« Service Hebron Police depart-, ment is "meeting its quota"-for issuing good traffic citations. A new program, spon sored by the Hebron Business Association, allows Police Chief Richard Karolus to cite four, drivers per month for courtesy above and beyond the rules of the road. <> Karolus issues the tickets when he observes a driver being extra courteous. Allowing another vehicle to move into traffic from a parking lot or when a driver motions to another at a stop intersection to go first are' a couple of examples. The citation, printed similar to a traffic ticket, states the driver has a notice to appear at the Village of Hebron for safe and courtesy driving and is sentenced to recieve $5 off a purchase from the listed merchants on the back of the ticket. The tickets are not just limited to local residents, Karolus said. Three persons have been given these friendly citiations since the program was implemented May 1, including drivers from Lake Geneva, Wis., Hampshire'and Hebron. "The first reaction when I stop someone is: 'What did I do?,' " says Karolus. "I am quick to advise them of the purpose for presenting this ticket. Then their attitude changes. Most are pleased that they get money rather tHan having to pay." The idea to issue friendly citations in Hebron started when Karolus heard about a similar program at the Los Angeles police department while on a visit. The idea had been kicked around for about a year and became active when the business association agreed to lend its support. "It's excellent public relations in the com munity," says Karolus. "We will continue it as long as the business association will contribute." Karouls adds that after 30 years of looking for violations, the hardest part of this program is now trying to see things that are right. Jim May.
