A different type of boating is rentable at Crystal Lake. By renting a sailboat and with the help from a sailing instructor, potential sailors can advance to skippers through the individual attention on sailboats offered by the Crystal Lake Park District. But first, there is a 12-hour basic sailing course available. After completing the course, individual sailing instructions are offered by the district for $15 to $20 per hour. A one hour private lesson is required before the final "Check-Out" test is given to individuals seeking a sailing card, unless the 12-hour course has been com pleted. Private lessons will be given June 3 to August 1, Monday through Thursday, at l-2p.m. and4:30p.m. to 5:30p.m. A three-hour Post (sailing) graduate seminar is also offered, that covers the basics of rigging and reviews sailing techniques. Residents of the park district can use a dry storage compound, located adjacent to the West Park boat launching facility, to store personal sail boats. Registration for the 16 available dry slips began in mid-April, and operates on a firt-come, ' first-served basis. The seasonal fee is $50 fee and includes a key for the protected storage area that can be locked up. Boats must be 16 feet of less to be stored at the lake's facility, and no catamarans are allowed. Motorboaters and sailboaters who are residents of the park district are eligible to use the Crystal Lake Main or West Park boat launches. Boaters are required to annually pur chase a key to use the ramps. To qualify for a key, residents must present: • Current utility or tax bill (proof of Crystal Lake residence). • Illinois boat registration card. • Required fee. • Illinois drivers license. Fees increase as the boating season progresses. From Jan. 2 to May 24, the cost is $15, from May 25 to June 29, $25, and after that date the cost rises to $35, Park district personnel supervise both boat launches and enforce the key- holders' policies. If the wrong owner is found using a specific key, the key can be confiscated. All boats not registered with the district will not be allowed into the lake. To keep boaters informed of the wind conditions, a flag pole has been erected at Main and West Park beaches. Green means fair weather with light winds, 0-10 mph. Blue is for fair weather with heavy winds, 10-20 mph. Red and blue means poor weather with heavy winds above 20 mph. The yellow flag warns that a storm is approaching, that' the beaches are closed and boats are re quired to stay off the lake. Seven sailboats, 14 Alumnacraft canoes and 20 rowboats are rentable through the park district during the week from 9 a.m. to 6:30p.m. at both beaches. Regular rental rates are $4 to $6 per hour for canoes and rowboats, and $5-7 per hour for sailboats.
