Savings up to 40% Chain ,«Fox Activities ByJeffHlnton Herald staff writer There's been a lot of talk about the best time to go fishing and the best ways to catch fish. But when you boil it all down, it becomes a simple matter of going whenever you have the chance. Statistics show that 62 million Americans fish. While that's impressive, one has to wonder why more people don't participate. "There are a lot of people out there who don't fish but would like to," says Tom Conley of AFTMA, the American Fishing Tackle Manufacturers Association. "Many say they don't have time, but I have to wonder if it's because they don't know how. It's a shame, because it's one of the most satisfying ways for a person to spend his leisure time." AFTMA, which sponsors National Fishing Week, June 3-9, 1985, encourages fishing as a family sport. It's an inexpensive activity that everyone can enjoy. And you don't need to go far to enjoy good fishing. Some of the best fishing holes are nearby and often go overlooked! A family considering fishing should keep the first outing brief, close to home and inexpensive, say AFTMA experts. Local streams and lakes are best bets, but farm ponds are great for family outings. Of course, permission to fish on private property is always a necessity. Beginners should never be concerned with the quality of fish they catch. Naturally, it's great when a family can catch a nice string of fish for the dinner table. But in the beginning, novice fishermen should just go for the learning ex perience, to enjoy the outdoors and develop a style of fishing to suit their pleasures. It's a common belief that families who fish together grow together. And when there are kids involved, you can give them experiences they'll remember for a lifetime. To fishermen far and wide the Illinois' Chain O'Lakes is an anglers' heaven. Connected by the Fox River the lakes are stocked with thousands of fish each year. The tug and the pull of a great lunker is every fisherman's dream, but knowing when and where to fish is the secret to the Chain O'Lakes. According to some, May is the Jt>est time to fish the Chain O'Lakes because the Walleye are spawning. It's better to use a natural bait when trying to catch Walleye in the late spring and early summer, said a park ranger. According to the fishing reports compiled week ly until October, the Walleye hit in the dead-end parts of the lake, where they are on the nesting beds. In June, the Bass and Bluegill start coming into the shallows, and are hitting on live and ar tificial bait. The weather is the key element in learning how to fish the Lakes. On cool days the water temperature drops, slowing down fish activity. And a week of hot weather.can cause the fish to seek the depths. The best time to plan a fishing trip is when the temperatures are in the low 70's. The fish are more active at this time, and are more likely to strike.
