Location is also an important factor, Cunat said. He said two surveys were conducted to find the best area for an airport in McHenry County. The studies suggested that pilots of small planes should face no more than 30 minutes driving time to get to an airport. Advisory committee member Buck Hillbert, a retired , com mercial pilot, said location of the airport is a major factor in the decision-making process. "Access to the tollway and a good open space with the least possible disturbance of the local population is our concern," Hillbert said. Hillbert went on to say that an airport in or near a community has a good economic impact on the community. In addition, Hillbert pointed to the future saying that possible small jet aircraft might be considered. The proposed nine sites to be looked at include existing air ports in Lake In The Hills and Gait Airport in Greenwood Township. The other sites are: -Northern Pump farm, east of Wonder Lake and south of McCullom Lake Road in McHenry Township. -South of Kishwaukee Valley Road and east of Vermont Road in Seneca Township/ -West of Route 47, east of Adamson Road and south of Foster Road in Grafton Township. -South of the Marengo- Huntley blacktop, west of Beeman Road and north of Church Road in Coral Township. -Northwest of Woodstock, west of Lamb Road in Hartland and Greenwood Townships. -U.S. 14 to Lucas Road, one mile east of Route 47 in Dorr Township.' After the final decision, an application is made to •- the Federal Aviation Ad ministration (FAA) for a grant to buy and build on the site. "We hope to pull people from the east, from Elgin, which will be closer than driving 40 to 50 minutes to DuPage Airport," Hillbert said.
