Sports McHenry Jr. Youth League McHenry Jr. Youth League baseball is gaining steam. A top performance this week came from Dan Schmaus of the Royals in the Mini Division. Schmaus' 11 strikeouts led the Royals to a 10-4 win. MINOR DIVISION Royals 10, White Sox 4 Dan Schmaus fired six strong innings, and ad­ ded three hits to the Royals' offense, as the win­ ners topped the White Sox, 10-4. Schmaus allowed Just four hits and three earn­ ed nins, while walking three and fanning 11 K.C.-Werth doubled and hit his first homer of the year, as the Royals' improved to 2-0 on the season. Rob Caldwell was 2-for-3 with two RBI Schmaus knocked In four runs. SPORTS LOG Cancer Run offered f • • The Second Annual McHenry Run for Cancer is scheduled for Sun­ day, June 23, at Knox Park in McHenry. A 10K road race and a two-mile fun run will begin at 8 a.m. with check-in and registration starting at 7:15 a.m. T-shirts.will be given to all runners and 10 other prizes will be awarded at random. A trophy will be presented to the first male and first female finisher in the 10K race, and medals will be awarded to the first three finishers in each of nine age brackets. Ribbons will be awarded to the first three finishers in each age group of the two-mile fun run. The public pool at Knox Park will be open to all runners at the con­ clusion of the race for a fee of $1. Entry fees are $8 for the 10K race, and $7 for the fun run for those registering prior to June 20. After that date, the fees are $9 and $8, respectively. All entry fees are sent directly to the American Cancer Society. For entry forms or additional information, contact Betsy Les, 385- Bike-a-thon planned The Wonder Lake Bike-A-Thori for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation will be held Saturday, June 29. Bikers of all ages are welcome. This~y£ar's chairperson is Dave Zieger. Prizes for raising funds will be awarded by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. All participants who raise at least $25 will receive a CF patch. Participants raising over $25 are eligible for t-shirts, sport bags, digital watches and other prizes. To register and receive sponsor sheets, contact Zeiger at 728-0742. Cystic Fibrosis is the country's number one genetic killer of children and young adults. "It's a great way to have fun and raise money for an important cause," says Zieger. 12" tourney June 28 Knox Park will be the site of the Fifth Annual Hiller & Hamm 12" Miller High Life Softball Tournament, to be held June 28-30. The 24-team, double elimination, slow-pitch event requires a $100 entry fee. The first 24 teams to submit their entry fees will be seeded. All entries must be received no later than June 18, by the tourna­ ment directors. Rosters must be sent along with the entry fee. All area children 15 year»«old and under are encouraged to enter the annual Fishing Derby, sponsored by the City of McHenry Parks and Recreation Department. The contest will be held on Saturday, June 8, at the Petersen Park Beach. Casting time IS from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Registration of $1 per person will be taken at the beach that day. Prizes will be awarded for the smallest fish, largest fish, most fish caught, and much more. Bring the whole family and make this a parent and child activity. Bike Club sets race - j> CRYSTAL LAKE -- The McHenry County Bicycle Club announces its third annual invitational ride, The Udder Century, to be held June 1, in conjunction with the Harvard Milk Days. Registration's being taken beginning at 7:30 a.m. at McHenry County College. Riders may choose between a races of 31,62 and 100 miles. Registration fees will be $8 until May 18, and 10 afterward. The cost for children under 12 will be $5. Included in the cost of the ride is sag, food, maps, a patch, a com­ memorative water bottle and a spaghetti dinner following the rides. Fishing tourney June 2 On Sunday, June 2, White Hen Pantry will sponsor the next leg of the continuing White Hen Pantry Tournament Trail, a professional- amateur fishing tournament at the Mississippi River, in Savanna, 111. A full payback with a guaranteed first prize of $1,000 will be award­ ed in the pro division. First prize in the amateur division will be a Lowrance electronic depthfinder. Prizes will be awarded to the top 10 percent of the entry field. A special bonus will be given for the big­ gest bass caught during the event. Entry fee is $50 for pros, $15 for amateurs. Entries must be postmarked on or before the Monday preceding the tournament. Registration forms and complete tournament information are available at all White Hen Pantry food stores. Summer gymnastics CRYSTAL LAKE -- The Lake Region YMCA will begin its summer gymnastics program in June. From pre-school through high school, all classes will be held at Crystal Lake South High School. Pre-school classes will be held twice a week for four weeks, and grade school classes will be held Monday through Thursday for two- week sessions. There will be four two-week sessions throughout the summer. High school age gymnastics will be held twite a week for 13. weeks with participants having option to pick weeks they wish to sign up for. There will also be a gymnastics team this summer, also at South. The team will run on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays for 13 weeks, with each participant having option to sign up for at least seven of the 13 weeks.
