McHenry County S By Cliff Ward t£ *jj WOODSTOCK - This summer the § Woodstock Square has activities that range 3 from theatre, art and music to just sitting on !2 a park bench and enjoying the warmth of * the summer sun and the square's pictures- < q u e V i c t o r i a n b e a u t y . As always, many of the square's activities revolve around its gothic style opera house, the home of the arts in McHenry County for almost 100 years. One of the newer partnerships, that be- teen the opera house and Northen Illinois University's theatre department, continues this sumer when NIU presents '"Die Fifth of July." The comedy-drama opens June 7 and runs weekends through July 6 at the opera house. Later that month, Woodfest, a local group that brings professional theatre productions to the opera house, will present "Painting Churches." The play, written by Tina Howe, is the sensitive and funny story of an aging couple. The production opens July 31. The opera house is also home to many one- night events this summer. The girl who will defend the focal honor in the Miss McHenry County Pagant will be decided at the Miss Woodstock contest on June 18. Singer-guitarist David Bromberg, well- known musician who has played with Bob Dylan, The Eagles, Carly Simon, and Phoebe Snow, among others, will present a concert at the opera house May 25. For information about show times and ticket prices for opera house presentations. call the box office at (815) 338-5300. Just beyond the front doors of the opera house, the Woodstock square is host to a number of activities this summer. Among the lush foliage and colorful flowers sits the bandstand which is being readied for another season of evening con certs by the Woodstock City Band. This group of musicians, a local institu tion for more than a century, takes to the bandstand the night of June 12 for a series of nine consecutive Wednesday evening con certs. The concerts are free -- all you have to do is bring a lawnchair, or blanket if y o u ' d r a t h e r s i t o n t h e g r a s s . The Country Music Jamboree is being discontinued this year, but there are several events for lovers of non-musical arts. In ad dition to the annual Fair Diddley sponsored by the Mental Health Resource League on May 19, the Senior Citizens Hobby Fair will be held on the square June 15. The Art Fair, a showcase or both young artists and the better-known talents, comes to thes quare on Aug. 18. For those who enjoy food fresh from the fields, the farmers' market held on the square can satisfy a bushel-basket sized ap petite. The open-air market comes to the square on Wednesdays in about mid-June. Bargain hunters will be able to practice their favorite pasttime this summer on the square. Partcipating merchants will hold a Dollar Days sale July 11-13. On Aug. 8, buyers can shop under the sun at the Sidewalk Sale. Never Sets! Chain '0 Lakes Area Having a Summer Party?
