Marengo Ihe highlight of summer fun The Marengo Park District's annual "Fourth of July Town Picnic" is the highlight of summer fun in Marengo. It is held at Indian Oaks Park, on the Southwest edge of town. Fried chicken is the main course on the picnic menu but there will be many kinds of sandwiches available, including brat- wurst, and plenty of cold beer and soft drinks. Food will be served from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. For musical entertainment the park district has once again invited the Marengo Community'Band to put on one of its concerts. This year the band will be directed by (me of Marengo's most talented musicians, Jack Ness. Ness will also be bringing his own band, the "Sweet Expressions." The picnic will include an Arts and Crafts Fair this year. On display will be the works of many local artists. Much of the art work will be offered for sale. Local craftspeople may apply for booth space by calling 568-5126. Adult activities will feature the popular 12" slow-pitch Softball tournament that the park district gets such a fine response to each year. This year's tournament will be a 6-team, double-elimination affair, featuring teams from the Marengo-Union area. Trophies will be presented to the first and second-place teams. For those? not wishing io play ball, a horseshoe tournament has been arrang ed. There will be first and second-place trophies for this event as well. Adult activities for the 1965 picnic have been expanded to include a "Mud Volleyball Tournament." Team entry fees will be $30, all proceeds go to the Set tler's Days Queen Pageant Scholarship fund. Contestants must be 18 years or older to compete in this event. Teams will consist of eight players, and each team must have at least two women. As in the other events, there will be prizes for the first and second-place teams. To register for the "Mud Volleyball Tournament" call the Marengo Park District office at 568-5126. The children will also have plenty of ac tivities. Included in this year's schedule are a balloon send-off, relay races, three- legged races, a water balloon toss, a scavenger hunt and several other games. Bernie the Bear and Company will enter tain the kids with one puppet show in the morning and another in the afternoon. For the younger children there will be a "Big Wheels Race." This event is for pre schoolers only and contestants must br ing their own bikes. There will be preliminary races and the big finale, with prizes for all contestants. Last but not least, the ever-popular "Rotten Sneaker" contest will be repeated this year. Moms have been cau tioned not to throw out those grotey old tennies. They could be winners. Con testants in this event will be judged on the "smelliest" sneakers, the "dirtiest" and the "most abused." Winners in this event will be awarded their prizes at arm's length.
