Five men were killed and 11 rescued while divers scrambled to reach the seven missing. Divers, following the sounds of light tapping inside the rig, rescued two men by cutting into the rig's hull. The nine men who fell overboard were quickly rescued by the three tugs that were pulling the rig, the Tonkaway, on the Bayou Chene about 1 a.m. The divers ran in oxygen lines in hopes of keeping the submerged crewmen alive in air pockets in the barge-type rig, which turned upside down in 19-foot-deep water. 'i Divers found the first body just after daybreak and found four' more later in the morning while trying to break into the hull of the rig. A sheen of diesel fuel slowed the divers and authorities worried about thunderstorms approaching from the Texas coast to the west. , Coast Guard Lt. Michael O'Brien said a southeasterly wind was blowing at about 11 mph at the time of the accident and weather conditions were "nothing real extreme." The Coast Guard said the Tonkaway, a posted drill rig, was near Morgan City when it over­ turned. Authorities do not know why the rig capsized. It is a "posted" rig -- described as "a barge on top of a barge" -- and is used to drill for oil in shallow or marshy waters, the Coast Guard said. The bottom barge sinks into the mud and the top barge is posted above it. Workers drill through the bottom barge to reach oil. Terrebonne Parish sheriff's deputies early today requested that 10 "body bags" be taken to the scene and called in the parish coroner. The rig is owned by Temple Drilling Co. of Houston. A com­ pany official refused comment about the accident. Coast Guard officials said 23 men were aboard the rig when it capsized. All ll rescued workers were reported in good condition. Eight were taken to Lakewood Hospital in Morgan City, where injuries ranged from bruises to a frac­ tured tibia.
