Union's Railway Museum is the largest A salute to the diesel-electric locomotive that replaced steam engines on America's railroads will be held Memorial Day at the Illinois Railway Museum in Union. Five historic diesels will operate Memorial Day, and 12 others will be on display. The 1940 stainless steel Burl ington Zephyr train will be among the engines running. On Memorial Day, pieces of equipment not normally open to the public will be available for inspection, including the cab of a diesel locomotive and the operating steam engine. Located in Union, just outside the na tion's rail capital, the Illinois Railway Museum is one of the largest and most diverse operating railroad museums in the country. The museum's collection of more than 200 pieces of equipment (which includes trolley cars, street cars, interurbans and steam, diesel and elec tric locomotives) is on display at the 56- acre museum site. Also on the grounds are a refreshment stand, bookstore, gift shop and picnic facilities. Many pieces of equipment have been restored and are operated on the four- mile demonstration railroad mainline and the mile-long trolley loop. The museum operates weekends from May through October, and daily Memorial to Labor Day. Upcoming special event days include Railroad Day, June 16, and the annual Trolley Pageant, July 4. Railroad Day will feature handcar and caboose rides and a Studebaker car show. The Trolley Pageant is the largest operation of trolley, street and electric interurban cars in the Midwest. A variable admission (more when diesels and steam run -- fuel costs) en titles visitors to unlimited rides, on equip ment operating that day. The museum is located in Union, 6 miles north of US-20 Marengo exit on the 1-90 Northwest Tollway. For a recorded message update, phone '312)262-2266.
