Federal law requires that all pleasure boats 16 ft. and over, using coastal waters or the Great Lakes, carry Coast Guard-approved pyrotechnic signals. These signals must be replaced 42 months from the date of manufacture. Acceptable methods for disposing of flares (including those manufactured in 1961 or earlier) include: • Retaining these flares for back-up use to expand signaling time in the event of an emergency. • Donating expired flares to local Coast Guard Auxiliary or Power Squadron for use in their training classes. • Ignite handheld flares on land in a safe area, much the fame as highway flares would be ignited. • Contact a local law enforcement or fire protection agency for their advice on proper VDS disposal. . • Don't jettison VDSs overboard. • Don't activate marine flares in a non-emergency situation over regulated waters. • Don't dispose of' 'live" flares in household trash. • Don't launch meteor signals on land, especially over or near buildings or trees. rules."
