Law helps single mothers collect on child support I 4 - DEAR ABBY: I am a single mother who has had difficulty getting child support for the last 10 years. I became so desperate, I even took my ex-husband to court, but it didn't do any good. I spent hundreds of dollars on legal fees. Finally, I just gave up. I recently discovered that there is a new federal law for child support enforcement. There are state and local agencies that collect child support for women in my situation, and their fees are vefy small compared to what most lawyers charge. Abby, not many woman are aware of this, but they do read your column. Please let them know about this new law. HELPED AT LAST DEAR HELPED: Thanks for wanting to help others as you have been helped. In investigating the problems concerning child support, I came upon a wonderful new handbook titled, "Handbook on Child Support Enforcement." Some questions that are answered: -My boyfriend and I are still in high school, and our baby is 6 months old. Why should legal paternity be established if the father has no money to support the child? -What if he denies he is the father, or says he's not sure? --The father of my child is in the Army, but I don't know where he's stationed. Can the enforcement agency find him? v-My ex-husband is in the Navy. Can I get his child support payments deducted from his paycheck? --My ex-husband has a good job and he's willing to have sup port payments deducted from his paycheck, but his employer won't do it. Now what? --Can I force my children's father to include them under the group health insurance where he works? My ex-husband has remarried and has another family to support. How will this affect the support of my children? --How can I get my child suppon increased? --I think the child's father is still in the area. What information will the enforcement office need to find him? -What if I don't have his Social Security number? . --The father of my child is in jail. Can I get support? -I heard that my children's father is buying a very expensive car. He owes over $5,000 in back support. Can the credit agency be told this? _ -As soon as my children's father is notified about child sup port enforcement, he moves. What should I do? -My children and I need financial assistance now. Their father left us 10 years ago. Will they still try to find him, or is it too late? For a iree copy of the new "Handbook on Child Support En forcement," write: "Child Support Handbook," Consumer In formation Center, Pueblo, Colo. 81009. This helpful booklet is free to anyone who requests it. Be sure to include your name and address, clearly printed. DEAR ABBY: This is for "Hurt," whose husband never gave her presents on special occasions. I had the same trouble with my nusband, so for Valentine's Day I bought myself a beautiful pair of earrings and enclosed a card that read: "To Miriam with all my love...Miriam." My husband got the bill. J MIRIAM (Getting married? Send for Abby's new, updated, expanded booklet, "How to Have a Lovely Wedding." Those interested are asked to attend an organizational meeting at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 28, at the Barrington United Methodist Church, 3111 S. Hough St. Carpeting maintenance easy A bit of preventive main tenance can work wonders with rugs and carpets. As home care experts know, surface dirt is much easier to remove than ground-in soil. That's why it's important to vacuum on a regular basis. Once done, there's little else to do aside from occasional spot removal. While vacuuming, give special attention to heavy traffic areas where dirt can easily become embedded. About once a year, rugs will probably need thorough cleaning. Those doing the job themselves only need a trusty vacuum, sponge mop, bucket and a spray foam cleaner. Following package instructions for applying foam, sponge it in evenly across the rug with a clean sponge mop. After it dries, v acuum thoroughly to remove dried -cleaner. ^ Remember these tips: ...Test the carpet for color- fastness before using any rug cleaner or champoo for the first time. ...Place plastic bags or aluminum foil under the legs and bases of furniture to prevent stains while shampooing. ...Deal with spills immediately. If liquids are spilled, blot up as much of the moisture as possible. Then clean with spray foam rug cleaner/ ...Areas of the rug that really need it-dingy traffic paths, tell tale splatters from a party, the area in front of the sofa-may need special attention oc casionally with spot-cleaning.
