Yard fun keeps kids home, busy By Christine Wood Herald staff writer What's an easy, inexpensive, fun activi ty that will keep kids (yours and the neighbor's) busy for hours on one of those "I've got nothing to do" days? A backyard fun-fair, talent show, cir cus, or art exhibit, planned and prepared by the youngsters during the day and at tended by the adults in the evening. Art exhibits are good for a first-time backyard project. The kids could start by making paintings or drawings to hang from clotheslines or fences. Paper plate faces can swing mobile-style from low branches or porch rails. A wagon might t^e the display table for painted rocks. Older children might enjoy silhouette tracing, or making large cartoons from each kid's initials. A child of alnfiost any age can make collages from magazine pictures; and paper eyes glued to a twig or pine cone will probably be the start of a whole colony of Mother Nature's funny figures. This is a good time to bring out all those scraps of material or yarn, or those plastic meat trays that were washed and put away for a rainy day. This no-holds-barred art show can in clude several years worth of ceramic clay pots made in art class, as well as any other projects that have been lovingly made possible by books available at the local library. Fun-fairs can include a little of everything. One child may set up his "portrait studio" while another runs the popcorn concession. Face painting is always fun, and a pet show might be in teresting. Well, maybe too interesting. Better forget the pet show idea. But don't forget parental participation at the end of the day. This is the vital motivational factor that keeps the kids' enthusiasm going from morning til night. And have a good time! saved over the years. Costumes will be needed for talent shows, circuses, or parades, but here again, imagination and creativity should preclude any formal outfits. Long whiskers, a tail, and a loud roar can turn a youngster into a lion as expertly as a seamstress with expensive material and nothing else to do. Talent shows will, of course, include all the skills acquired at music lessons or dance class; but perhaps the kids would enjoy lip-sinking a popular tune while strumming on a makeshift guitar.
