f Ring wood • Conservation District draws thousands of visitors from area RINGWOOD -- Approximately 120,000 people visited McHenry County Conser vation District sites in 1984. "Ninety-two percent of all the people visiting and using the sites were from the county, and 8 percent were from outside the county,"" said Ken Fiske, MCCD ex ecutive director, adding that the ratio for use of state parks in the county was almost the inverse: Ninety percent of the people visiting the state parks were from outside the county, and 10 percent were from McHenry County. "That's what we're here for," Fiske said. "As long as most visitors are from within the county, there won't be any user fees (at MCCD sites)." The conservation district owns 23 sites that encompass more than 3,600 acres, which are divided into four regions. From the last Sunday in April to the last Sunday in October, the sites are open from 8 a.m. to sunset. From November to the last Sunday in April, the sites are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Permits are required for camping, which is restricted to no more than five consecutive days. The following is a summary of facilities available at the conservation district sites. (For more information about the MCCD sites, contact the district office at 6512 Harts Road, Ringwood, telephone 338-1405 or 678-4431): Glacial Park Nippersink Trail Creek: The 630-acre site contains the five-mile Nippersink Trail, which is linked to coun ty equestrian and snowmobile trail systems. The trail begins at the intersec tion of Keystone and Barnard Mill roads. Free brochures containing maps are available, and there is a shelter on the site. Nippersink Creek also is a launch site for canoes, and more than 700 craft are launched daily, Fiske said. Three miles of in-park trails include the three-quarter-mile Coyote Loop, which is well-marked and suited for easy walking. In wintertime, the trail also may be utiliz ed for cross-country skiing. In addition, Glacial Park is the site of the conservation district headquarters. Kames -- short ridges of stratified sand and gravel deposited by a retreating glacier -- intersperse the glacial area. The site is a good location for nature studies, and sanitary facilities, drinking water, shelter and a limited number of picnic tables and grills are provided. Lyle C. Thomas Memorial Park and Landing: The 113-acre site is the result of an intergovernmental agreement bet ween the village of Spring Grove and the conservation district. The location also is used for launching or removing canoes from Nippersink Creek. In addition, the area is the site of a national historic monument which marks the erection of the first vertical silo built in the United States. The park is recommended for fishing, and walleyes and crappies bite in the spr ing, while bass, channel catfish and bullheads bite in the slimmer. Northern and bass also swim in as the temperatures drop in the fall. While there are no camping sites or drinking water, there are sanitary facilities, a playground and a limited number of grills and picnic tables. Nippersink Canoe Base: The base is comprised of 140 acres located at the junction of the Nippersink Creek and the Fox River. No permit is required for canoeing. IL Canoeists may continue beyond the point of the base and down the Fox River, but they should leave the river at Hickory Grove because it is the southernmost lan ding owned by the conservation district on the river. Fishing facilities are provided, but no overnight camping is permitted. Sanitary facilities and drinking water also are available. Harrison-Benwell: Two miles of nature trails thread through the 75-acre parcel, which is open for cross-country skiing in the winter and for hiking in the summer, hi addition, there is a large open area maintained for team sports. Water, sanitary facilties, picnic areas and six camping sites also are available at the park. Requests for campsites should be made one week in advance. A bridge, which is accessible to wheelchairs, crosses the creek, which separates the parking and picnic areas from the wooded trails and campsites. Burrow's Woods: The 407-acre site southeast of Harvard is an ideal location for camping. A special group camping area can accommodate as many as 65 campers, and there are 15 additional smaller sites. There is a shelter, plus plenty of grills and picnic tables, water and sanitary faciltiies available.
