' for auto travel games Taking trips with small children can be a tough road to travel, unless you proper ly prepare. "So help the children enjoy the trip by playing ^entertaining games with them," says Willy Wonka, magician < and nutrition spokesman. Here are some easy games you can play with the children: The Detective Game -- This one's real easy and lots of fun. Tell one of your children you are looking for a certain item, and start to give them clues until he or she guesses right. You can describe an animal, auto, building, tree, or just about anything. Once you have a correct guess, that child then becomes the clue giver. What makes The Detective Game so good is that you can vary the difficulty ac cording to the age of the child. I Spy -- Here'a a game that's a varia tion of the one just described, only this time it's done entirely with colors. One person hi the car says, "I spy something, the color Can you guess what I spy?" Whoever guesses correctly can name the next colored object. Are You T.igtontng -- Games should not only be fun but should help your children learn and better develop their skills. "Are You Listening" is a perfect exam ple of this because it helps your children sharpen their hearing skills which will help them broaden their attention span. It's simply done by saying, "I hear a sound ... are you listening?" The children then guess what sound you heard. Examples of various sounds might be a truck's horn, factory whistle, fire engine, airplane, etc. The Alphabet Game -- Here's another one to help your children learn. Each per son playing begins with the letter "A". They must then find a printed word that begins with (he letter "A". Once they point it out to the others in the car, they then go to the letter "B", then "C" and so on all the way to "Z". The first person to complete the entire alphabet wins the game. Be sure to set rules like no ab breviations or single letters. This game takes some time to finish and gets very exciting toward -the end ... which is ' about the time everyone is begging the driver to drive past a "Xerox" store! The License Plate Game -- Everyone's probably played this one at one time or another and is particularly good for traveling across country. Each person has a list of all the states. On shorter trips you may want to limit the states to just those you'll be passing through. Without repeating once, each person must find a car with a license plate from each state. Each find is then confirmed by the other fellow travelers. The first person to com plete the list wins. On the shorter trips, you can go through the list three or four times. This is another game where you might have to establish a few rules up front. For example, you may wish to not count license plates on semi-trailers which often have a dozen or more dif ferent plates. Also if you're traveling near the Mexican or Canadian border, feel free to inclujde these on your list. The Photographic Animal Hunt -- This is one of Willy's all time favorites! The animal hunt is a story in which all children can participate. The adult tells the. story and makes appropriate gestures or sound effects for each sentence. The children listen and repeat each sentence and gesture. The story may go something like: "Let's go on a photographic animal hunt ... get your camera... get your hat.. . put it on. . . open the cabin door... walk through the tall grass ... crawl quietly through the grass... back to the cabin." The adult leader will then have the children repeat this sequence in reverse. This can even be adapted to something you saw or did earlier in the trip. As you can see, this is both educational and fun. "Games like these are a great way to teach children," according to Willy Wonka who educates young audiences about nutrition. Willy has been entertain ing children and parents nationwide since 1981 when Willy Wonka Brands, a leading manufacturer of quality candies, began a public service program designed to emphasize to children and their parents the importance of good nutrition. Willy suggests another game for children of ages four through eight. It's called "I'm Willy Wonka." To play, the child describes something that he or she sees out the window as you're driving. The child then says that he or she is going to cover it with pure milk chocolate or any desired flavor they want. The other child then has to guess what the object is.. Then they repeat the pattern over and over again. Parents and children can learn another magic trick from Willy Wonka by sending for "Willy Wonka's Magic of Good Nutri tion," an informational pamphlet that opens up into a colorful poster displaying the basic four food groups and containing a magic trick how-to.
