The 1,500-piece carved delight makes its Midwest premiere in Milwaukee courtesy of its creator, Henry Magnin of Van Nuys, California. Cavalcades of miniature clowns, giant herds of tiny elephants, hand-carved and hand-painted horses, plus thousands upon thousands of circus performers, animals, thrilling trapeze acts, and a long street parade of famous circus wagons paint Milwaukee's museum in brilliant circus colors. A modern day miniature, stadium-type circus, complete with arena acts, animals and clowns provide a balance between the historical and contemporary circus worlds. Historic circus posters (including some on loan from the Circus World Museum in Baraboo, WI) and similar memorabilia, add to the festive setting. Magnin's carving goes back almost 35 years. In 1981, he took early retirement at age 60 from E.F. Hutton and Co. in Beverly Hills to devote full time to his lifelong hobby and interest in the circus. He carved and painted some 3,000 pieces, of which approximately 1,500 are includ­ ed in the traveling display at Milwaukee's museum. All of the carvings are scaled 1 u'-inch to the foot and done mostly in basswood, jelutong or pine. "Free wood is my favorite," says Magnin, who teaches car­ ving when he's not serving as a docent at the California Museum of Science and In­ dustry, the first and only other place to display his collection. Every figure is a recognizable circus personality, costumed with the props and acts that made them famous. Even roustabouts and helpers are based on ac­ tual people. Some of the famous parade wagons are replicas of those which once appeared in past Milwaukee Circus Parades. An assortment of mounted photographs going back to the turn of the century and as recently as 1973 also are of past Milwaukee parades. These, along with antique circus toys from the museum's collection, add to the exhibit's authentici­ ty and realism. Magnin's miniatures' first Midwestern exhibit coincides with the historic return of the Great Circus Street Parade to Milwaukee on Sunday, July 14, and the Carson & Barnes tented circus at Milwaukee's lakefront on July 11,12 and 13.
