Your move SPECIAL Nexr? I Needs of the many are important Dear Editor: Over the past year, I've often read in the Public Pulse about how the wants of the affluent few overpower the needs of the many. I must wholeheartedly agree. Whenever the proposed ex pansion of McHenry Sand and Gravel's operations are brought up, it seems that the possible loss of property value to the residents of Grlacier Ridge overpower the loss of iobs by the 100-plus employees of McHenry Sana an6 Gravel, Enterprise Ready Mix and their affiliated companies. These are families that live, bank and shop in this community. They are well-paid individuals who buy everything, from automobiles to birthday cards from our town merchants.. If this is not enough, let us not forget our developers, past and future, -who realize the economics of building in a community with the materials such as sand and gravel, which are needed for fill, asphalt and concrete, so readily available. In conclusion, I ask that the people of McHenry, McHenry City Council and the McHenry County Stoning Board, please not be swayed by the accusations of the few, but by the wants ana needs of the many. Ronald J. Belpedio IK'HI Sea of green hats greets cotincil Dear Editor: Anyone who was not around city hall last Thursday about supper time sure missed a show. - As reported in last Wed nesday's Plaindealer article on the gravel pit expansion, the city council was scheduled to meet in "executive session to discuss pending litigation." Executive sessions, by • statute, are designed to strategize handling of the issues, not to take action on those issues. Nonetheless, McHenry Sand and Gravel chose this time to stage a "fashion show." They apparently came across a sale on pretty green caps, because here were all these workers, en masse, dutifully crowding (voluntarily, of course) into the council chambers to model all those brand new hats. It seemed to. me that* this whole act might have passed for intimidation or strong-arm tactics had it not looked so silly. I'm sure glad my boss never suggested I spend my supper hour styling a pretty nat. The point of all this apparently was to convince the council that all ttfese jobs are supposed tcf depend on the gravel pit ex- pansion. I don't think anyone in his right mind believes that, especially the owners , them selves. If there is any in timidation, it, in my opinion, is ^kessiokJ budget BUTCHERS being applied effectively on the workers. Another point/incidentally, in the same Plaindealer article, leaves us wondering why Dr. Farmer was quoted as having not taken a stand on this issue. There is, in the District 15 school board's records, a firm statement in opposition to the gravel pit expansion as reported by the McHenry Plaindealer dated July 25, 1984. Philip Wheelock Poherty's contributions are noted yo M< Dear Editor: I have just finished reading our feature article on former ayor Don Doherty. I would like to point out that during Don's term as mayor, the McHenrv Area Rescue Squad was formed. As a charter member and former president of the squad, I can tell yoif that Don has con tinually supported the rescue squad both as mayor and as a ivate citizen. It is one more of many civic activities Don has unselfis)ily supported. I feel that you have made an excellent choice as parade marshal and I hope that the day turns out to be especially nice for him. Gary Baseley Editor's Note: The parade marshal is selected by the McHenry Area Chamber of Commerce. Certainly, he is in a far better position than anybody else in this country to make such & judgment, as disappointing as it may be. ' ' The rhetoric continues to be tainted with hostility from both the White House and the Kremlin, yet the talk of a meeting betweeen Mr. Reagan and Mr. Gorbachev goes on. . If there is to be a summit, or even a less formal meeting between the two leaders, it can be threatened by the rough now being exchanged. It can only lessen the op portunity that some accord be reached aimed at making the world a somewhat safer place. We would urge both govern ments to "cool it" and to con centrate on the possibilities of success rather than failure.
