Page 10 - PLAINDEALER-HERALD, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 5,1985 Unique post card collection to be displayed at museum Between 1898 and 1974, Chicago served as home to Curt Teich and Company, a large printing company specializing in post cards, advertising pamphlets and brochures, maps and blotters. Begun by German immigrant, Teich, who saved samples of everything the company produced including original art work that went into the production of the items, the resulting archives of photographs and drawings are now being used to tell the history of 20th Century America. In 1982 the comp)ete collection was given to the Lake County Museum to manage . and preserve. It makes up the largest post card collection in the world and includes some 1.5 million unique views. On Sunday, June 9 at 2 p.m., visitors to the McHenry County Historical Museum in Union will have the opportunity to learn how the Lake County Museum is preserving, cataloguing and managing the collection through a presentation by Katherine Hamilton-Smith, curator of special collections at the museum. Among the post cards that Ms. Hamilton-Smith will be bringing along are many relating to scenes in McHenry County. According to Hamilton-Smith, post card companies like the Curt Teich Company sent photographers all across the country. They documented everything and anything that could be sold on a post card-- from Mark Twain posing before his boyhood home in Hanibal, Mo. to a group shot of a winning baseball team. The photographic record they brought back was a visual preservation of American life. The program will provide a first hand way of experiencing those earlier glimpses of American life and learning more about the unique collec tion. The McHenry County Historical Museum will be open City's brush burning uncontrollable by wind High winds last Friday morning contributed to a city- sponsored brush fire that got out-of-control near the McHenry Sand and Gravel west pit. McHenry Mayor William Busse said Monday that when the burning of brush at the Anderson Tree Service pit began, winds were calm. But later that morning, the wind changed direction and intensity and the large accumulation of debris caufpit fire. The peak winds were clocked at nearly 50 mph. Hie McHenry Township Fire Protection District was called to extinguish the blaze. Dep. Chief Chris Bennett said le dep£ two alternatives: Truck water back-and-forth for hours due to the department was faced with the size of the fire, or, call for mutual aid from surrounding departments. A third possibility presented itself when tne Millers offered to bring water in from the gravel pit via cement trucks. "There was no imminent danger," Bennett said, referring to property loss or human life. In light of this, the deputy chief said that rather than drain this district and surrounding districts of fire equipment, he decided to accept the offer. "Hie Millers have always made their equipment available to us," Bennett said. "We never used it before, but in this in stance we accepted." Busse commented that the city may take a closer look at its brush pick-up policy. S I . 0 0 O F F on 510.00 purchase with this ad! Limit 1 coupon per family) &T.
