The finals of the competition, hosted by Bruce Jenner and Mary Frann. will air June 21 on CBS. Contestants are asked to compete in academic, physi cal fitness and talent categories. The talent submission of 1984 s winner, 19-year-old Amber Kvanli. was a song- and-dance routine done to "The Varsity Drag." But she explains: "Before I did that I had never danced before in my life! One of the things Junior Miss is proudest of is that- we are judged not by what we do but how we do it. The judge^are really looking for how you handle yourself. It's not how you handle yourself at your best, but how you handle yourself at your worst." Amber was brcught up in the small town of WiHmar, Minn., and entered the competition after she heard about tt over her high-school public-address system "i didn't even know there were competitions on the state or nation al level. I entered it for the scholarship and because I've always liked community service." She won a $25,000 scholarship, which she's currently using as a pre-med stu dent at Minnesota's St. Oiaf College. Due to her heavy school workload, she's had a hectic time making personal appearances. "It's a scholarship competition, so it would look kind of tacky to lake me out of school to travel.-' she giggles "The best thing I've learned this year is how to manage my time." Amber is looking toward to this year's competition, and to again seeing Jenner. with whom she became friendly when he hosted last year's competition. She met Mist Frann recently. "She was a Junior Miss once," says Miss Kvanli. "and we discovered we had the same time man- agement problems. She's gorgeous!" ©' B ono's • VOf%OS Jun» >6-22 stro\Xuc By Lillian Bbno (April Jt-Moy 21) your hard work will not go unrewarded Be assertive and you will get what you deserve.
