THESE SURGICAL TECHNIQUES, FIRST USED IN THE U.S.S.R. AND IN COLUMBIA, CAUSE BETTER FOCUSING OF LIGHT WITHIN THE EYE BY RESHAPING THE CORNEAL WINDOW. IN THE SOVIET TECHNIQUE (FYODOROVI, CALLED RADIAL KERATOTOMY, HALF MILLIMETER-DEEP RA DIAL CUTS GOING FROM THE PUPIL'S EDGE TOWARD THE WHITE PORTION ALLOW A NATURAL FLATTENING EFFECT ON THE CENTRAL CORNEA TO OCCUR. REFINED IN THE U.S.S.R. SINCE 1973 AND IN THE UNITED STATES SINCE 1978, MORE THAN 100,000 KERA- TOTOMIES HAVE BEEN PERFORMED WORLD-WIDE. SEVERAL U.S. STUDIES HAVE RECONFIRMED ITS SA FETY AND HIGH EFFECTIVENESS, THOUGH SOME RARE, SERIOUS COMPLICATION HAVE OCCURRED. Rebecca Blim, daughter of Sandra Blim of Johnsburg and Paul Blim of Rockford, returned recently from the 45th session of Illinois Girls State where she was a citizen and candidate for Lt. Governor. Girls State is a program of the American Legion Auxiliary for young women who have com pleted their junior year of high school. She participated in mock governments from the city to state level. The 500 delegates attendin were instructed in the politic process and organization of various governments. They held political party caucuses, con ventions, campaigns and elections. Girls State provides an awareness 0 of a citizens' responsibility to participate in the democratic process. She will be a senior at John sburg High School. REBECCA BLIM MY CORRECTS NEARSIGHTEDNESS AND ASTIGMATISM. IN THE COLOMBIAN TECHNIQUE (BARRAQUER), THE SURGEON USES HIGH-TECH EQUIPMENT TO REMOVE A QUARTER-MILLIMETER-THICK CONTACT LENS- SHAPED WAFER FROM THE FRONT EYE WALL.
