INDEX/SECTION A WEDNESDAY, JULY 10, 1*»85 McHENRY Today 's Weather 4 Shop around' commission urges Panel eyes costs of health care By Kelly Thompson Shopping for the best health care prices should be no dif ferent than shopping for any other service, according to new state council studying health care costs. In an effort to allow con sumers to take charge of their health, the Illinois Health Care Cost Containment Council has issued a report with the prices for eleven coinmon services at all 250 hospitals in Illinois. In formation for the report was compiled by Touche-Ross, a Chicago company. The report is • based on figures provided by Illinois hospitals for various services. Consumer-conscious residents in McHenry in need of hospitalization can save $34 by referring to the report. Semi- private rooms at the Good Shepard Hospital, in Barrington are $254 a day and only $220 at the 1 Memorial Hospital for McHenry County, Woodstock. When approaching Chicago, the gan in semi-private room rates widens from $195 to $460. Nancy Dial, assistant, director of administration for the council, said the hospital price information is becoming more important as consumers absorb more of their own costs. Most health insurance plans pay 85 percent of costs. That leaves consumers paying at least 15 percent, she said. It's even more important for con sumers who have lower coverage or none at all, Tony Fick, insurance salesman for American Family Insurance, said insurance companies will not offer incentives to con sumers who shop around because it would be "restricting choice." However, Dial reminds health care patients that health in surance and medicare can be costly, and consumers pay for them through premiums, taxes and out-of-pocket payments at the time of service. Dial cautions consumers who refer to the report .that just because prices for one hospital are higher or lower than another for rooms does not mean prices for other sei will reflect the erence. jrvices same price differ Pat Lippert, manager for the McHenry Internal Medical Association, said while the report might be good for patients wno need common services, it would not be wise for those needing special services. "Some hospitals ha coronary care units, plained. ve better ' she ekj- Also, hospital choices often are dependent on where the patient's doctor is on staff, she said.
