Roichardt Soap opera aficionados are seeing double on so many shows that it almost takes a scorecard to keep track of the characters. The Grant Putnam-Grant Andrews (Brian Patrick Clarke) saga has finally concluded on "General Hospital," but other dual roles keep popping up. The first alter-ego story line was the Viki-Niki split- personality conflict on "One Life to Live" in 1968. That story line has recently been resurrected, and it still works, thanks to the first- rate performances of Erika Slezak. "All My Children" has been dabbling in the Adam-Stuart Chandler (David Canary) twin- brother story line for many months, but the institution alized Stuart was only recently brought back to the forefront -- alter Canary was announced as an Emmy nominee for his portrayal of the two very different Chandler brothers. The "Loving" story of look-alike brothers Jonathan Matalaine and Keith Lane (John O' Hur ley) recently has taken a bizarre twist, with sugges tions that Jonathan has sold his soul to the devil. "Ryan's Hope" has jumped on the dual-role bandwagon with Chessey Blake (Susan Scannell). who's impersonating the supposedly dead Gabrielte Erika Slazak Dubujak. Miss Scannell is also playing the real Gabrielle. who is languish ing in a padded cell. The story of twin sisters Marley Love and Victoria Carson (Ellen Wheeler) has won favor with the audience of "Another World." but thankfully. "Santa Barbara" has con cluded the plot line in which Judith McConnell por trayed Sophia Capwell and her male counterpart. Dominic. Miss McConnell is a competent actress, but she hardly made a convinc ing man. Perhaps the most unusu al dual story line of aH is on "The Young and the Restless." in which black actor Phil Morris plays Tyrone Jackson and Tyrone's white counterpart. Robert Tyrone. Let's be thankful thatthe writers aren't scripting sto ry lines for quadruplets -- yetf vC ' IMS Computog 33) © Aorobict ©Radio 1990 IE) Newiywed Game © Ragit PhMbin't Ufettyiat ©Newt 17 © dD Family Feud © MOVIE: 'Adventuret of tha WNdomes* Family' An ur ban family lack lei the harsh real ities of life in tha wilderness. QD Hot PrapotMo* with Richard Bailor Q0 MOVIE: "Chattanooga The BOX SEAT The All-Star game: Where legends play By Adam BecArman Striking before the July 16 All-Star Game in Minne apolis would hardly be in the best interests of the Major-League Baseball Players Association. Why forfeit the $2.1 million in receipts the owners are expected to contribute to the players' pension fund? In fact, the All-Star Game was created 52 years ago by Chicago Tribune sports editor Arch Ward as a means to generate money for former players found destitute during the Depression. The fans chose the stars they wanted to watch in 1933. Fans didn't vote again until 1947. then lost the vote in 1957 (when Cincinnati's ballot-stuffing faithful nearly kept Henry Aaron and Willie Mays off the squad). then gained it back in 1980 when the then-new commissioner, Bowie Kuhn, sought to boost attendance by resuming the fan-selection process. The public has dutifully punched holes in those Gillette cards ever since, continually incurring the wrath of sport-scribes who insist they could select more equitable starting lineups. Yet these same writers tortured a perennial All- Star fan hero for 20 years before granting him Hall of Fame status in 1975. Ralph Kiner led the National * League in home runs and --slugging percentage seven straight years, from 1946- 52. Yet during a 10-year span with the Pirates. Cubs and Indians, his team fin ished last or next to last seven times. For him. the midsummer classic was his sole chance at national exposure. "Walking into an All-Star clubhouse is always an overwhelming experience," says Kiner. "Since I never had the benefit of playing on a decent team, I was probably % more overwhelmed than most." But the slugging outfield er never let it show. Kiner is the only player ever to hit homers in three straight All- Star games. In '49 he hit one out in Brooklyn. In '51 he tagged a solo shot in Detroit. But it was the 1950 connection in the top of the 9th at Chicago's Comiskey Park that he rates as his favorite among his 369 life time dingers. "Because it- sent the game into extra innings." Kiner says. "In front of the whole country." Among Red Sox fans, however, Kiner is equally infamous for indirectly costing their boys the pennant. Earlier in the game. Kiner had sent their leftfielder, Ted Williams, back to the wall. "It was a low liner and Williams broke his elbow on the scoreboard. He claims I ruined his swing. He only hit .386 the next year." But in 1950. a Williams- less Red Sox squad fin ished four games behind the Yankees. And to this day. many a Sox rooter still chokes when watching now-broadcaster Kiner work a Mets game. vC; IMS Computes
