Bee sting can be fatal if victim has allergy A bee sting can create an unpleasant experience during summer outdoor activities/ especially for the five percent of the population who are allergic to the insect's venom, said Tod Turriff, manager of the National Safety Council's Public Safety Department. / A strong allergic reaction to bee venorty he said, can cause a sudden drop in blood pressure with a loss of consciousness, shock and even death. "Most of the up to two million people in the U.S. who are allergic to bee stings don't know it," Turriff said. "Those with a history of severe allergic reactions often carry a emergency self-treatment kit (perscribed by their physician) to prevent or at least help reduce the severity of the sting's reaction." An allergic reaction to insect venom can vary from dizziness to headaches, abdominal cramps to extreme nausea, and breathing difficulties to death. Extreme itching, hives, swelling (in a different location of the body) are also warning signs of an allergy, Turriff said. Per sons who suffer such reactions should see a doctor immediately for proper treatment. "Most people suffer simple, yet unpleasant reactions to a bee's sting," he said. These include sudden pain, swelling and redness near the area that is stung. "A bee will often deposit its stinger in a person after it at tacks," said Turriff. "If this happens, you should try to gently scrape the stinger out from beneath the skin. You want to remove the stinger carefully to prevent the venom from spreading." Any sting should be thoroughly cleansed with soap and water to prevent secondary infection. Also, ice packs can be applied to soothe the skin and minimize swelling. Turriff-recommended a few simple precautions to help prevent getting stung and disrupting outdoor activities. If you encounter a stinging insect, move away slowly. A bee is looking for pollen; it will not attack unless provoked. Slapping at it or making quick movements will only bring trouble. "i „ . Keep your shoes on when you are outside. A bee un derstandably resents being stepped on. Wear long pants, a long sleeve shirt and gloves when working in the garden, especially if you are near fruit or flowers. Be particularly careful after a rain as pollen is scarce then and. insects are more excitable. Look and smell as little like a blossom as possible. Light- colored clothing, floral prints or sweet smelling cosmetics (in cluding some suntan lotion) can attrct insects. Bees and other insects are attracted to uncovered food. Keep everything covered and don't leave garbage in un covered containers. Have an exterminator remove insect hives or nests which may be located near your home. The foregoing information also pertains to wasps, hornets and all stinging insects. McHENRY PLAINDEALER Section A Wednesday. July 17, IMS Page 13 SURANCE LIQUIDATORS. Downtown McHonry United Press International SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - It didn't take long for Rod Franklin to decide he'd better try an emergency land ing of his single-engine airplane in a hayfield a few miles north of Springfield. Franklin and his son, Jim, were returning to the Kankakee, III., area from a trip to Abilene, Texas, on Monday when they were forced to land during a thunderstorm about 4:30 p.m. because their fuel supply had run dangerously low, the elder Franklin said. Neither of the two was hurt. Franklin said they intended to land at Springfield Regional Airport to refuel. But they arrived as a fast- moving thunderstorm from the northwest closed in and prevented them from landing at the airport. While the Piper Cherokefe 160 cir cled to wait for the storm to sub side, Franklin said, the fuel supply became so low that he decided to land the plane to avoid worse trouble. Blood drive successful The McHenry Area Jaycees sponsored their annual Blood Drive June 24 for the Aurora Blood Bank. Some U6 people from the McHenry Area at tempted to give blood, but 106 volunteers were accepted. This blood was very much needed, especially during these summer months when people are recreating more than any other time of the year. Since people are more active, there are more accidents and un fortunately more blood needed too.
