NORTHWEST HERALD Section B Wednesday, July jl, 1*5 Page 11 Nation Letterman, 'fat tub of goo' face off on TV United Press International NEW YORK - Atlanta Braves pitcher Terry Forster, steadfastly refusing to divulge the secret of his weight, traded gibes about his con siderable girth with late night talk show host David Letterman early today. Letterman invited Forster to ap pear on NBC's "Late Night With David Letterman/' calling the pro gram "a tribute to fat athletes." Forster accepted the invitation to discuss his weight. "We're ready for him," said Let- Down home UPIphoto renovate housing for the poor. He said the week of manual labor will be a breeze compared to his days on the peanut farm. Practice pays By Betty Luman United Press International SPACE CENTER, Houston -- A shuttle had never before suffered an engine shutdown after takeoff, but when the crew of the Challenger was forced to execute an "abort to orbit," it was nothing new to commander Gordon Fullerton. Challenger's No. 1 main engine shut down five minutes and 45 seconds after blastoff Monday, the first such emergency in the 19 shuttle missions to date. Fullerton, like all other shuttle pilots, had repeatedly practiced exactly such an emergency in simulated launchings in a special computer-con trolled shutUe trainer. BHlie Deason, spokeswoman for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, said Fullerton and co-pilot Roy Bridges underwent more than 100 hours of simulated flight with engineers constantly throwing problems at them. terman. "We've had the floors reinforced." * Forster, a 33-year-old relief pitch er for the Braves, came on the show eating a large delicatessen sand wich and carrying two others which he gave to Letterman and band leader Paul Schaefer. "I was passing by my fifth delica tessen of the day and thought I would pick up something for the show," Forster said. "This is the David Letterman sandwich. It has a lot of tongue on it." Letterman had introduced For ster with a quip that his current baseball card shows him at 210 pounds, "which we all know is a lie." Forster told Letterman his weight was "somewhere between your weight and Jumbo the elephant in the circus." Letterman told the audience he had had second thoughts about call ing Forster "a fat tub of gob" on his June 17 show. Forster said he had considered suing Letterman after viewing a videotape of the show several times. 'He's a modern-day pirate' United Press International KEY WEST, Fla. -- Treasure hunter Mel Fisher, who found a king's ransom in the sunken galleon Atocha, has asked a federal judge to keep a former employee he calls "a modern-day pirate" away from his $400 million bounty. Fisher, the president of Treasure Salvors Inc., filed an injunction Monday against Richard Lightner, a former employee he says is trying to horn in on the $400 million mother lode from the Atocha that was found July 20. Fisher accused Lightner of using his firm's research to file claims to fictitious vessels near the Atocha site in hopes of recovering some of the treasure scattered on the ocean floor when the Spanish galleon sank in a 1622 hurricane. U.S. District Judge Sidney Arono- vitz was to begin hearings on the case today and was expected to rule on the admiralty claim within the next few weeks. The dispute involves a 13 Vz- square-mile area known as the "Bank of Spain" 41 miles west of Key West that Fisher claimed in July 1971. Fisher believed the Atocha sank Health costs outdistancing incomes of elderly patients United Press International WASHINGTON -- Studies to be released by a house committee show that health care costs are rising twice as fast as the incomes of the aged, and elderly sick people are forced to spend .themselves into poverty before the government comes to their aid. Two studies sponsored by the House Select Committee on Aging, chaired by Edward Roybal, D-Calif., show that the elderly will be spending 18.9 percent of their income on health care by 1990 -- up from the 14.6 spent in 1984. The Los Angeles Times said the studies, conducted in Massachusetts by Harvard Medical School and the Blue Cross-Blue Shield insurance compa: nies, indicate that chronic illness forces the elderly to pay for much of their own health care until they "spend down" to the poverty level and thus qualify for Medicaid. Man attacks own mother United Press International SANTA ANA, Calif. - An emo tionally distraught man simply "flipped" and gouged out his moth er's eyes and stabbed and slashed her body with a kitchen knife, police said Tuesday. The woman, Betty Ann Knisley, 55, was reported in serious condition at Fountain Valley Hospital. Her 30-year-old son, Richard, was arrested at the family home late Monday for attempted murder and mayhem. "He certainly flipped," Sgt. Pres ton Moran said, "but I have no information that he's had any prior mental illness." Knisley apparently attacked his mother in the house they share at about 9 p.m. Monday, Moran said. "We don't know if he's on drugs or what. He's just talking in cir cles," Moran said.s Officers responding to a distur bance call found the woman with her eyes gouged out, a stab wound to the chest and her stomach slashed, apparenUy by a kitchen knife' DAEY DINING DELIGHTS! Treasure Salvors attorney David paul Horan said Lightner's admi ralty claim site overlaps part of the ocean bottom on the northern and southern ends of the area Fisher has claimed. The Atocha's treasure was found at one end of Fisher's claim site and Lightner was reported to have divers working at the opposite end. So far, there have been no clashes between the two dive teams. Fisher claims Lightner used in formation he obtained while work ing for Treasure Salvors to file ad miralty claims on non-existent vessels located on the fringes of Fisher's claim site. "He's a pirate -- a modern-day pirate," Horan said. "He sat there and watched us draw this stuff on the chart." "What we intend to show is that they are fictitious vessels. They never existed and all he's trying to do is lay claim to the north and south of our wreck area so he can get some of the scatter," Horan said. rent soft\ SOFT WATER RENTAL 975 par mo. •NO installation charge •NEW fully automatic softeners •TWO year option to buy with • FULL rental fee deducted •ONE phone call can answer any questions 312-259-3393 • ARLINGTON SOFT WAtl« CO.
