Cows, sheep,pigs...and cavies? By Cliff Want Sentinel staff writer WOODSTOCK - Most people who wan der through the McHenry County Fair are familiar with the sounds of the animals - the baritone bellow of a champion steer, the coarse bleet of the downy sheep, the gentle squeak of the Abyssinian cavie. Huh? Yes, that's right, county fairs are for more than common barnyard critters. Other judging events at the fair feature animals like the cavie, which is more commonly known as the guinea pig. The competition "probably started with kids who wanted to raise livestock, but couldn't have large livestock," said Karen McCloud of Harvard, the superintendent of the competition. McCloud's son Alan, 14, raises and breeds cavies, and her younger son Kevin, also has taken an interest in the furry little fellows. All told, Karen and her husband, David, have about 50 cavies in the house. However, "a lot of kids just have one or. two animals," Karen said. The cavie originated in South America, •Jf • and was bred in England to its domesti cated size of about 2 pounds. The wild version can weigh 8-10 pounds. Alan McCloud started raising cavies when he was 7, and in those days the rabbit officials judged cavies, but "the rabbit people never seemed to know any thing about guinea pigs," Karen said. That, along with her son's interest, "kind of got me involved," said Karen, who has been a competition official for six years. The fair competition features four dif ferent classifications of guinea pigs. The American cavie is a short-haired guinea pig that is closely related to the cavie first bred in England, McCloud said. A sub- classification of the American cavie, the satin, is noted for its extremely shiny coat, she said. The Teddy is similar to the American, and has a short, fuzzy coat like a teddy bear, McCloud explained. The long-hairs of the cavie kingdom are the Peruvians and the Abyssians. The Abyssinian cavie has a series of swirls on its back and its side called rosettes. The Peruvian has such a long coat that the animals are put on platforms so they can be properly judged, said McCloud, who added that the Peruvians "look like mops." Whether your guinea pig is a champion or not, McCloud said the little guys make Continued to page 33 ECKY'S HOMEGROWN ountjy VEGETABLES ORNER About a mile north of Woodstock on Rt. 47 at Charles Road. 337-0348 10-6 - 7 days a week Buy by the bushel for canning and freezing!
