Page 34 Northwest Newspapers 1985 Fair Guide 100 youths to participate in 4-H events Over 100 young adults between the ages of eight to eighteen are scheduled to showoff their pet dogs and cats at the McHenry County Fair as part of their 4-H programs. Members from 4-H clubs all over the county will compete in seperate cat and dog shows, and a dog obedience competition. The dog obedience competition will ac tually take place on Saturday, July 27, before the fair actually begins. The obedi ence competition is held early because it starts at 9 a.m. and runs until the after noon, and would tie up too much of the limited space at the fair for too long. The competition will take place in Bldg. C at the fairgrounds on that day. The obedience competition is broken down into several catergories based upon the experience level of the trainer and the dog. The basic categories are beginner and novice, which are then further broken down depending on whether it is a begin ning trainer and new dog, experienced trainer and new dog, experienced trainer and experienced dog, etc. The judging is based not only on the dogs performance during the competition, but also the trainer's performance and the grooming of the dog. The trainers have been working with their dogs every Wednesday and Thursday since April with the help of volunteer trainers who donate their time to help teach the children. A "fun match" was also held July 13 to give Square dancers to strut their stuff McHenry county's six square dancing clubs are going to perform several times during the McHenry County Fair. One new event has been added to the fair's agenda. The fair board at its late July meeting approved Square Dancers of McHenry County using Building E from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.wi Saturday, Aug. 3 to host a square dancing party. The public is invited to participate, Ted Pierce, Woodstock square dance enthusiast, told the fair board. As exhibitions of what can be accomplished and as entertainment, the square dance groups will perform before the grandstand audience during the Miss McHenry County Pageant. They will also perform on Saturday and Sunday before the tractor pull events. The local clubs include Woodstock Squares, Woodshed Whirlers, Johnsburg; Milk Center Squares, Harvard; Hip Huggers, Crystal Lake; Swinging Squares, Cary; and Bachelors and Bachelorettes, McHenry. the dogs and trainer experience in an actual competition, without the pressure. The dog and cat shows will take place on Wednesday, July 31, the opening day of the fair. The dog show will start at 4 p.m in Bldg. E and should run until about 6 p.m. The cat show will then follow at 7 p.m., also in Bldg. E, and run until about 9 p.m. The participants have been receiving instruction on the care of their animals from veterinarians and other experts who have donated their time to the program. The judging emphasizes the care the ani mals have been given by owners, rather than looking for characteristics that only come through breeding as in most profes sional dog and cat shows. "Our main goal is education," said Mary Wildolff, extension advisor. "The participants are really competing with themselves." In each of the events, the participants are given ratings of A, B, or C, and ribbons awarded based oh the ratings. A "Best of Show" is also awarded in each of the events for the most outstanding performance. There are currently 88 children involved in the 4-H dog obedience training pro gram, 46 in the dog showmanship pro gram, and 73 in the cat program. Wildolff said that usually about two-thirds of those children actually end up participating in the county fair events. No open class competitions have been planned this year so only members of the 4-H will be competing in these events. Your Choice ANY SIZE 211S.
