When the home's listing through^&realty agent expired last month, he went to Help-U-Sell, a real-es­ tate counseling ser­ vice, and set about selling the house himself. By cutting out the real estate agent's commission, Cooney was able to knock down his price another $15,000 to a rock-bot­ tom $212,000. The house has not yet been sold, but Cooney still thinks do­ ing it yourself "is the best way to go." "You yourself have to find out who's really interested, and we found out that Realtors don't really* do that anyway," he said. Mid-South investors sometimes take the closest look at Mid- South companies. And iftany of those who boiwt or owned stocks in area compa­ nies before the latest stock market rally made tidy profits -- es­ pecially in transporta­ tion companies, re­ gional banks and firms with special or unusual developments. Experts see advan­ tages to investing in lo­ cal stocks, but say there is a pitfall: emotionalism. Nearness to sources of information may give Mid-Southerners a jump on other inves­ tors when it comes to judging whether local stocks are ripe for profits, they say. "You can certainly find out more about Federal Express and Holiday Corp. in Mem­ phis than you can in Dallas or San Francis­ co," says John C. Beane III, vice presi­ dent of Cooper Street Group Securities, a Memphis brokerage firm.
