Some of TV's best-loved shows, including "M*A*S*H" and "The Odd Couple." came to the small screen after first being box-office hits in theaters. In the upcoming TV season, ABC will debut "Stir Crazy," starring Larry Riley and Joseph Guzaldo in the roles Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder originated in the 1980 movie of the same name. See how many of these TV series, which shared the same titles as the movies on which they are based, you can name: 1) John Houseman held court in the movie and network-TV versions of this series, which now airs on Showtime. 2) Ken Howard and Biythe Danner took a lot of ribbing for playing roles originated by Spencer Tra cy and Katharine Hepburn in this 1973 sitcom. 3) ABC first aired this series in 1955. NBC decid ed to play it again with David Soul in 1983. 4) Jack Warden man aged to take over for Wal ter Matthau when this screwball comedy joined the TV lineup in 1979. " 5) Jodie Foster reprised Tatum O'Neal's Oscar-win ning role in this 1974 sitcom. 6) Shaun Cassidy rode a two-wheeler in this 1980- 81 series. 7) A colorful submarine was the setting for this 1977-79 sitcom and 1959 movie. 8) Debbie Watson played her on TV; Debbie Reynolds and Sandra Dee starred in the movie roles. 9) This tale of New Eng land life was the first night time soap opera. 10) Roddy McDowall monkeyed around in both the series and movie offer ings of this sci-fi adventure. 11) Ron Ely knew how to swing in this 1966-69 adventure. 12) The many McFad- dens and their future spouses were the focus of this 1954 movie and 1982- 83 series. 13) David Birney took over Al Pacino's 'beat in this 1976-77 cop series. 14) NBC canceled it in 1983, but this series may live forever in syndication. 15) Inger Stevens left the rural life to reprise Loretta Young's Oscar-win ning role in this series. Starring Michael J. Fox. Christopher Lloyd. * * * By J.T. YURKO The paradox of time travel goes like this: If you could trav el back in time and meet your father, and somehow a'ter the past so that your father never meets your mother, then you would never have been born, so how could you exist to grow up and change the past? Michael J. Fox plays an average California teenager who has far more normal things to worry about than the paradoxes of time travel -- namely girls, cars and girls, in that order. These concerns take a back seat, however, when, the local mad scientist (delightfully played by Christo pher Lloyd) takes a DeLorean car and turns it into a time machine. When Fox is threat ened by terrorists, he finds himself with only one option: Escape to the past. Fox finds himself stranded in 1955 and wonders how he can gel "Back to the Future " He turns to the somewhat younger mad scientist for help, but along the way he unwittingly interferes with the meeting of his parents Unless he can arrange their rendezvous as it was fated to happen, he may simply cease to exist So Fox acts as Cupid for Mom and Dad. But tempting fate has its consequences, and Mom falls for hicn instead of for Dad. Fox plays his part with just the right amount of bewilder ment and California "cool." but Lloyd nearly steals the show. The first hour of the film is talky and slow-moving, but it effectively sets the stage for the time travel everyone knows is coming, and it becomes time well spent when the inevitable comparisons between the "80s and the '50s start cropping up The local movie house, which is playing porno flicks these days, was playing a Ronald Reagan western back then. Everyone asks Fox, who is wearing a quilted vest, why he's wearing a life preserver, and when Fox orders a "Pepsi Free." the waiter offers him a Pepsi but insists that he'll have to pay for it. "Back to the Future" is the prime pick of this summer's hit flicks. It has laughs, thrills, chases, romances, and enough twists to keep you guessing, even if you should happen to solve the unsolvable time-travel paradox, (c) IMS Compuiog (13) 60 (TO) Motorweek © Heartlight City CE) © ABC News Nightline mm Hawaii Five-O W1 (26) Jimmy Swaggart QD Switch © 18) Twilight Zone © Saturday Night live 12:00 AM O MOVIE: 'Marine Raiders' This adven ture depirts how the marines are trained !< fight their country's battles ai O'Brien, Robert Ryan, -ijt h^ssey. 1944. He's scheduled to make his "Dynasty" debut in the third episode and will play a "Svengali-like character." Hamilton's career has been a long series of almosts and might have beens He was considered big-star material in the late '50s and early '60s, and appeared in movies like "AM the Fine Young Cannibals," "By Love Possessed" and "Where the Boys Are." But Hamilton's slick good looks went out of style in the mid- to late '60s. Only his dates with Lynda Bird Johnson, then the first daughter of the land, and his widely publi cized draft deferment (he claimed to be the sole sup porter of his mother) kept him in the public eye. After the breakup of his romance with Lynda Bird (who went on to marry Charlat Robb, now gover nor of Virginia), Hamilton kept his career alive with television work ("The Survivors." ABC's 1969 big-name flop, in which he Stavla Wondar George Hamilton co-starred with Lan . Turner, and "Paris 700C") and an occasional movie. In the late 1970s, he staged a comeback of sorts, appearing in "Roots" and starring in the 1979 surprise hit "Love at First Bite." but his follow-up flick, "Zorro, the Gay Blade" (which will be shown this week on the CBS Friday night movie). failed to score at the box office Maybe "Dynasty" will finally do the trick. After all, it's made a world of differ ence for Joan Collins, the former starlet who spent at least as many years as Hamilton on the fringes of stardom. THE MUSIC MAN -- Smokay Robinson's new five-part NBC weekly music series, "The Motown Revue Starring Smokey Robinson," premieres this week. The emphasis will be on song Stevia Wondar, The Four Tops, DeBarge and Vanity are scheduled to appear as guests during the five-week run, anci some of the shows present nostalgic salute, specific years, using news clips, montages and music to recreate the appropriate feel 0 IMS Computes
