Also watching is Ida Dick- NOW OFFERING DISCOUNT BROKERAGE SERVICES • McHENRY SAVINGS BANK KEMPER CORPORATION / Kemper Corp. announced its sec­ ond quarter operating earnings of $14.6 million, or 88 cents a share, compared to the (3.8 million, or 26 cents a share reported for the three month period one year ago. Operat­ ing earnings for the first half of 1985 were $22.1 million, or $1.42 a share, compared to a loss of $4.9 million, or 34 cents a share for the first six months of 1984. Realized capital gains for the six month period in 1985 were $5.8 mil­ lion, or 38 cents a share, compared to a gain of $9.7 million, or 67 cents a share for the same period last year. Including these gains, net in­ come was $28 million, or $1.80 a share for the first six months versus $4.8 or 33 cents a share in the first six months of 1984. Sales for the six months were $1.2 billion, up 21.9 percent from sales for last year's period at $969.4 million. BUILDING CONSTRUCTION The inflation rate in the cost of industrial building construction took a plunge during the six-month peri­ od ended June 30, according to the Kemper Group survey results. The inflation rate for industrial machin­ ery and equipment also declined sharply for the second consecutive six-month period. Industrial building costs rose an average of 0.69 percent during the first half of 1985.
