NORTHWEST HERALD Section B Friday, August*, lftS f4g* Entertainment Heavy metal band hopes to rock their way to the top By Jeff Corliss Herald correspondent "In two years from now, we can be at the top." These ambitious words of lead * guitarist and co-founder of Danger, Greg Smith, may seem far fetched, because the trail to the rock and roll crown is longr hard and has many obstacles. But Danger has recently taken a giant leap towards that roy al throne, and now they are lunging for more. Described as McHenry's premier rock act, Danger will appear at the Edgewater Bar in Twin Lakes, Wis consin tonight. The Edgewater crowd will be treated to a well-mixed set that con sists of several originals such as "Star Spangled Rocker," "You're in Danger," and "Rock City." High ly influenced by the new West Coast rock, Danger will also play tribute to Ratt, Motley Crue, and Dokken -- three of Los Angeles' best bands. One of the show's many highlights is the performance of vocalist Steve Hurst. The enigmatic front man of the band combines an outstanding voice with energy enough to light up McHenry county -- qualities similar to that of Motley Crue's Vince Neil. Hurst, however, frowns on those parallels. "I don't like to compare myself to other singers," he said, "because I when I take my mind off my work, it takes away from the quality of my performance." The bassist, fan favorite and band co-counder Ray Roach matches Hurst's aggressiveness on stage, while adding a brilliant display of basswork. "If I don't get into the music, the crowd won't either. They love that," Roach said. Guitarist Smith lights up the stage with speed and grace. His leads are complimented by the steady yet solid rythyms of fellow Danger guitarist Dave Wallace. They combining their talents with the drumming of Mike Ratley. But the Edgewater show isn't the only things on the minds of this high flying quintet, for if a couple of projects fall through, the long trail could be cut short. Danger's popularity has been on a steady rise over the course of the summer, and these soldiers of for tune are not about to hesitate in their attempt to put McHenry on the rock-n-roll map. "We're trying to take it as it comes. The area does lack for this style of music, so you have to take what you can get," Ratley explained. A bigger and more promising pro ject has begun to unfold for Danger. An album is being made by Force Productions, and will be composed of five Lake County bands and five McHenry County bands. "They wrote me and offered us a spot on the album," Roach said. "We're definitely going to do it. After the album, there will be a series of benefit concerts with local cable TV and radio coverage. To help guide them through these projects is newly appointed manag er Scot Thompson. Thompson, ex- bassist for the McHenry band Moon, has already been an asset in his short time in charge. "What Scot's doing," said Smith, "is giving us organization, and get- tin' us jobs and promotion. He's trying to get us in at Great America and at the Aragon Ballroom in Chi cago. He's creatin' an image for us." "We can already tell already that Scot's going to be good for the band," Roach added. Come celebrate our 65th anniversary.
