AH kinds of interesting things are advertised in classified every *L Easy answers Common sense helps repairs By Ray Hill FINDING THE CORRECT REPLACEMENT FOR A, BURNED OUT BULB Tail-light bulbs, turn-signal bulbs -- all bulbs-- burn out sooner or later. When this happens to you, how do you buy the correct replacement? Easy. Remove the old bulb: Press the bulb in, turn it counter-clockwise and pull it out. There will be markings at the base (see drawing) in­ dicating its size and type. For example, the bulb in our drawing is an 1157 (a common automotive bulb). You simp­ ly ask the person at the auto parts store BULB (many service stations carry bulbs too) for an 1157. If the bulb is old and you can not make out what the markings are, taking the bulb with you. TEMPORARY REPAIR OF AN EXHAUST LEAK. The AIR (Air Injection Reaction) in the pipe in older cars sometimes corrodes un­ til a small hole develops in the pipe. If this happens, the noise may almost sound more like a tapping under the hood than an exhaust leak. Should you hear such a noise under your hood, check the AIR pipe. If you don't know where it is, ask a mechanic to point it out to you. If you do find a tiny hole, here's how to make a quick temporary fix. Buy a screw-type clamp at your auto parts store of the size appropriate to fit around the pipe. Wait until the engine gets cold. You don't want to burn your fingers. Now wrap several layers (half a dozen or so) of aluminum foil around the pipe covering the hole. Put your clamp around the aluminum foil and tighten the clamp snugly. This will hold it against the hole, eliminating the noise. Here are some tips on how to keep it from happening to you. - Change coolant every two years. A 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water offers optimum cooling as well as optimum freezing protec­ tion. - Be sure the cooling system is flushed clean every time the coolant is changed. - Be sure there is plenty of coolant in the coolant recovery reservoir. Check the reser­ voir every time you put fuel in the tank. -When the coolant is changed, replace the hoses and have the radiator cap pressure- tested. It's not a bad idea to replace the ther­ mostat at this time also, Just to be safe. Be sure the fan belt is tight.
