Page 8 McHENRY PLAINDEALER Section A Friday, August 16,19SS Community s. ̂ . O . 'v ~- * Mandtt' b v k a f The macho guys at high school are back on the football field and cute young girls are finding any excuse, or none at all, to stroll by. These are hunks of fellows - at least some of them -• and the old "early bird gets the worm" theme is in progress. We walked by, too, but it was all in the interest of getting some exercise. What better place than the wide, quiet street that passes McCracken Field. Something went wrong. It was nearly mid-August yet it took all that muscle and padded material to come in front of our eyes before we realized they were there. Not so with the young ladies. They knew exactly where they were headed and why. A lot of folks get depressed with the approach of fall just because it's a time when the greenery of earth dies. No matter that in the process we experience some of nature's most beautiful artistry. They look ahead to the picture of drabness that follows. We couldn't even lay claim to this kind of low feeling. We just hadn't remembered that boys take on a whole new aspect at this time of year, all because they're wearing a football uniform with padded shoulders. There can be only one reason for our failure to take note, and indisputably it's our age. No longer do we linger to get a better look through the fence, hoping to spy a particularly attractive quarterback. We just plod on with the aim of losing a pound. And even the weight loss isn't for the right reason. We remember when we stretched the muscles so certain people would notice. Not today! Now we struggle with the scales through stretching and bending only so we can enjoy a fudge sundae in the evening. This is silly! There are still lots of things we do to prove to ourself, and anybody who might notice, that the years haven't really caught up with our excellent physical condition. We still swing a tennis racket and do our bending exercises without admission that occasionally every muscle we use rebels. Then we do something stupid like not noticing that football is once again on the playing field and the big guys are in action. That kind of thinking won't fool anyone. But maybe the real clincher that we have passed the best things in life was our absolute lack of interest in the recent concert of "The Boss." First of all, we were born in an era when a concert was something with beautiful music. No maybe we just didn't hear the right part of this one. Or perhaps promos contained in the media hype did a lousy job of advertising. All we heard in four of these promos was a guy yelling at the top of his lungs that he was "Born in the U.S.A.," with the background of an American flag. Then did he have to grimace for the camera when he told us?.. Not having been part of the crowd of 70,000, we can only judge our reaction by what we read. The description of the "ear-numbing roar" from the huge crowd was enough to make us question our taste in what is generally described as music. Maybe it was the right fist he threw into the air when he reached the word "born" that got to the audience. Or maybe it was just the handsome hulk of man who was emitting these ear-splitting sounds. We can't help that nature failed to endow us with this kind of looks, but fist or no fist, we've never gotten near that kind of response when we performed, even from a handful audience. The media tells us the Boss has become more than a rock-and-roll superstar. The critic's words were "cultural icon," "an American archtype," and "an international symbol of America." Gee, we never heard anything like that for Pavarotti or Lawrence Welk and we thought they pretty much ran the gamut in musical tastes. The critic continued, "Be patient. Some of us feel obliged to explore and define and explain what we see as the reasons for his popularity and to figure out the deeper meanings of what he sings about." Not on your life, fellow! We never were good at puzzles and this is one we choose not even to try. We were raised on a trumpet that had some good sounds when we hit the right keys and executed the correct embouchure. When we didn't, pretty foul tones were emitted from the bell. It was as simple as that. We were in control and we had only ourself to blame when nobody clapped.
