Zverina UPI auto writer DETROIT - Ford, like almost every other domestic automaker, has been faring rather well in the hotly com petitive four-wheel- drive mini-truck mar ket as many would-be car owners jump into recfeational and off- road vehicles. Ford's Bronco II, a smaller version of its Bronco truck, is avail able in four trim levels, starting with the base model at $11,102. A long list of options and dress- ups transform the base Bronco into either the XLT or sportier XLS version. The top model, as in 1984, is the Eddie Bauer Edition, name(| after the designer of'outdoor and recreatidnal gear. Base priced at $13,365, the evaluation model costs $15,515, excluding a $405 destination charge. The designer package ($846) adds such accou trements as AM-FM stereo cassette, over head console, speed control, tilt steering w h e e l , a l u m i n u m wheels with P205-75R15 all-terrain tires, and a plush cloth interior. The Bauer version comes in an exclusive dark blue and tan exte rior color scheme, and Ford will ship each owner a designer bag, travel blanket and visor organizer. A i r c o n d i t i o n i n g ($708), power windows- power door locks < $292 >. trailer towing package ($219) and automatic locking hubs for the 4WD function ($40) are major options. A 2.8-liter V6 engine and five-speed manual overdrive transmission are standard, but a 2.3- liter four-cylinder turbo diesel engine may be substituted at no charge in all areas except Cali fornia and high altitude regions. A four-speed automatic transmission with overdrive costs an extra $676. The Bronco II is iden tical from the doors for ward to Ford's Ranger series- of light pickups. The Bronco II has a permanent rear roof with tinted side win dows that wrap up into the roofline. Although the driver's seat does not fold forward for rear passengers, the entire passenger seat tilts up towards the windshield. It does not move for- X >. v '<>: Travel tips from an expert . V . V ry Duct tape, an adequate supply of patience, and lots of American one dollar bills are handy on a trip, according to Tommy Bartlett of the Ski, Sky and Stage Show bearing his name in Wisconsin Dells, Wis., and himself a world traveler. "People get irritated while traveling and forget why they took the trip -- to get a complete change of scene, to relax. Stop worrying and remember that for the most part people are trying to make you happy," Bartlett said. Bartlett formerly hosted a television show on CBS called "Welcome Travelers" in which he interviewed famous and not-so-famous travelers to hear their traveling anecdotes. Among his many guests were Bob Hope, Glenn Ford, Gloria Swanson, William Holden and Ronald Reagan. "One dollar bills are excellent for tipping with out having to find your foreign currency while the porter is standing there. And it's rude to call foreign currency 'funny money.' To foreign na tionals, there's nothing funny about it at all," Bartlett said. Other observations from Bartlett, who now entertains 350,000 travelers a summer at the water show in the Wisconsin Dells: ' 1. Before you go, make a list of what you want 'to do. This will give you a game and goal plan for the trip. • * - „ 2. Lay out all the clothes you want to take on . -the bed. Eliminate half of what you have laid out. > Most of the things travelers carry with them are • ;" never used. With wash and wear clothing, your * -clothes can be fresh every morning. 1 I 3. 4fcyou're going to be gone more than two or *. ihreejyeeks to a foreign country, bring along a ; * • •smallportable radio capable of receiving short " • .'wave. You can hear what's happening in the rest >: of the world while you're on vacation. 4. Take two bars of soap and a couple of ; • Turkish towels. In the Soviet Union, the towels in •. hotels are similar to American dish towels. 5. Take all of your favorite toiletries and neces sary medications with you. They are frequently impossible to purchase in a foreign country. 6. Put your name and address and phone num ber on the inside of every bag. Put your initials in duct tape on the outside of the suitcases so they will be easy to recognize and less likely to be stolen. 7. Bring a couple of lightweight duffel bags in your suitcase. Combination padlocks, available at luggage stores, are ideal to lock the duffel bags. Have the store set the combination with your birthdate so you don't have to look up the num ber. On the trip home you can pack your clothing in the duffel bags and your fragile gifts in your suitcase. 8. Be sure that your passport will not run out while you're on a trip. In China and Thailand, for instance, you need a passport with six months life left in order to get into these countries. Also, don't throw away an old passport. Take it with you in case your current one is lost. A cancelled passport is better than nothing at all. 9. Don't let anyone take your passport from you. In the Soviet Union and a few other countries you have to turn your passport in to the authori ties, but in most other cduntries, be extremely careful before letting anyone hold your passport for you. 10. Record your passport number in many places -- your wallet, your suitcase, your address book -- so that you will always have access to the number. 11. Bring American drugs for the most common ailments of travelers*-- headache, dysentery, c o n s t i p a t i o n , s o r e t h r o a t , n a u s e a , a n d seasickness. 12. Bring money in American denominations of $50 and $20, no larger. Buy travelers checks from issuers who have a reputation worldwide. 13. The Bronco U s clear and legible instrumen tation lacks a tachome ter, vital for watching engine speed especially during low gear off- roading. But its noisy engine may be enough to remind drivers to keep those revs down. The Bronco H's V6 is rated at 18 mpg citv-22 mpg highway, accept able for a 4\YD rig. But power, even with the manual gearbox, seems in short supply and is not as responsive as four-cylinder engines in other makes. The 5- speed shiver is notchy and the clutch stiff, but both mesh well for this vehicle type. The ride is as bouncy as a real bronco on ail but glass-like roads due to its 94-inch wheelbase. A washboard surface sets the mini-truck skit tering to the right, while even slight cross- winds sets it changing lanes all by itself. The Bronco II shows its mettle off the road. It performed flawlessly on a muddy tract of land, negotiating up and down 3d-degree angles with the surefootedness of a mountain goat. Fit and finish is top rate and reflects Ford's ongoing commitment to improve quality and as sembly Home mechan ics. however, should be aware that access to r o u t i n e m a i n t e n a n c e items under the hood are limited at best. If the BroncoJI fits your driving needs, it's worth an extensive test d r i v e . C o m p e t i t i v e l y priced with other 4WD models, the plushly ap pointed Bronco is a win ner off road but needs to learn some highway manners. After all. that's where most of these vehicles will drive a good many miles.
