He has decided to drop one of his NBC hats. Pacheco will stop being the network's boxing consultant, a position in which he approved the bouts offered by the network, and will settle for being NBC's on-air expert analyst (for which he re­ cently signed a five-year contract). In his five years as a boxing consultant, Pacheco is credited with his patented "crossroads" fights, which matched equally talented boxers, regard­ less of name or marquee value. He also had the network use more of the smaller weight classes, and thereby opened the door for many Latin American fighters who had previously been ig­ nored by TV promoters. Many of "The Fight Doctor's" suggestions for the protection of fighters have been put into ef­ fect, particularly in his native state of Florida, where the newly established Florida Athletic Com­ mission adopted many of his progressive sugges­ tions. including banning fighters with detached retinas and boxers over the age of 35. Other suggestions which have been adopted in­ clude ambulances and paramedics at all fights, thumbless gloves, and the promotion of random drug-testing. But boxing doesn't take up all of Pacheco's time. He's written a book, appropriately called "The Fight Doctor," about his life as Ali's medic. The good doctor says that one of his reasons for cutting down on his ring work is to devote more time to his "creative endeavors" of writing, film production and painting. Pacheco has had successful one-man art shows in London, New York and Miami in the past year, and he is active in the pre-production work on a film, "Blue," based on a script he wrote about a professional wrestler. He is also writing a musical play for the London theater, along with singer Pe- tula Clark, has sold his screenplay, "Night Lights" (a black comedy about Vietnam), and is planning a musical with Al Hirt based on Pacheo's novel "Sweet Sam," The doctor's other books include "Triple Play" and "The Lector " The good doctor could very well be called a Re­ naissance man. but don't mention it around the gym.
