FORTY YEARS AGO A Gay Nineties Carnival Aug. 24- 26 will be sponsored by the McCul- lom Lake Property Owners Associa tion. Their motto, "Work When You Work and Play When You Play" will be emphasized the play aspect at a time when the war is over. Illinois automobile license plates for 1946 will have white figures on a maroon background, according to the Illinois Secretary of State Ed ward J. Barrett. As in the past they will be made of plastic material. Tfce second meeting of the newly organized Auxilary unit of the Mc- Henry American Legion Post No. 491 was held Aug. 16. New officers are: president, Mrs. Catherine We ber; first vice-president, Mrs. Min nie Green; second vice-president, Mrs. Margaret H. Smith; secretary, Mrs. Laura Yanda; treasurer, Mrs. Eva Bacon; sergeant-at-arms, Mrs. Laura Smith; assitant sergaent-at- arms, Miss Barbara A. Weber; his torian, Mrs. Mary Page; and chap lain, Miss Gertrude R. Weber. Corp. Joseph N. Schmitt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Math N. Schmitt of Court St., now stationed at Langley Field, Va., has been promoted to sergeant. He serves as a radar tech nician at the AAF training com mand radar observers school. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO The grand opening of Albert S. Blake's new auto sales center on Rt. 120, one-half mile east of McHenry, will be held Aug. 25-27. The public is invited to inspect the spacious new structure. Blake started business in a very small building on Pearl Street in June, 1930. At first the business specialized in auto electric and ignition repairs, but three years later moved to a larger building and increased ser vice to general repairs. The fran- shise of Dodge and Plymouth cars and Dodge trucks selected. The business expansion continued until the present. Supt. Richard Swantz said an impasse existed fol lowing a short executive session pri or to the regular meeting. About 100 people were in atten dance at an administrative hearing held for seven hours Tuesday in the McHenry County Courthouse re garding an application by Crescent Bay Landing, Inc. For a commer cial airport seaplane base on the Fox River near Johnsburg bridge. It appeared about three-fourths of those present were objectors to the proposed operations. As a result, the petitioners offered to amend their original application from com mercial to a restricted operation with a waiver to allow training op erations and a limit of two perma nently based plans. The state will study the request. Gilmer Rd., Round Lake, will cele brate her 90th birthday Friday, Aug. 16 at a family gathering in her home. Mrs. Regner was born and raised in the Johnsburg area, and married Leo Regner Fib. 14, 1918 in St. Mary's Catholic Church, McHenry. They became residents of Volo 27 years ago.
