NORTHWEST HERALD Section B Wednesday, August 21,1985 Page 5 Food Brody's life has a chocolate tint It's hard to say exactly what "Growing Up On The Chocolate Diet" is. It's Lora Brody's life story. It's Lora Brody's most fantastic chocolate recipes. With Brody, it's hard to separate the two, for her life is chocolate, and she makes her living as (yes, it's really true) a chocolate consultant. Only Lora Brody could write an autobiography in the form of a chocolate cookbook. She takes readers and cooks through the stages of her love affair with chocolate, beginning with chocolate desserts her mother whipped up during the 1950's (Mom's Chocolate Chip Cookies, Mom's Fudge Squares, Mom's Chocolate Cream Pie). She recounts her love affair with the Good Humor man (Old-Fash- ioned Peppermint Ice Cream and 5-Star Hot Fudge Sauce) and her early experiences where, as the wife of a Wall Street lawyer, she had to begin entertaining (SERVE A CHOCOLATE DESSERT). Travel, marriage, New York City, parenthood, suburbia, therapy, her progression as a food professional, and even a nearly-fatal plane trip are all flavored with chocolate, and so many of the milestones in her life resulted in her creating a new chocolate dessert in its honor. Chocolate Initiation Cake, a three-layer sour cream fudge cake, made an instant chocolate convert of her son on his first birthday. Caramel Baked Bananas with Chocolate Rum Sauce, served in large wine goblets, marked her return to sanity after going bananas (literal ly) in the grocery store. Chocolate Cherry Torte, which combines bittersweet chocolate, Morel- lo cherries, and marzipan, was developed during a stint as a chef for an executive dining room and became her husband's all-time favorite. What's cooking June Cavarretta W* Brody's recipes range from the simple (Hot Chocolate, not to be confused with the more mundane hot cocoa) to the complex (a chocolate wedding cake, tiers and all). "Growing Up On The Chocolate Diet" only becomes a cookbook after you've read through the memoirs. While you'll find much to tempt and tease your palate, Brody's always easy, sometimes earthy, style takes you through the book cover to cover before you're able to pick up your spatula. Finally, Brody tells you just how to stay on the chocolate diet. She thoughtfully includes her own abridged list of "chocolates that I would throw myself in front of a five-ton semi doing eighty mph to get." "Growing Up On The Chocolate Diet" is available at Walden Book store in Spring Hill Mall. Homemade cookies an edible reward ' Here are two contemporary classics to fill your cookie jar.
