The popularity of McHenry and vicinity as an attraction for fisher men was enhanced this week when Walter Dietz, nephew of Ben Dietz of McHenry, caught an eight-pound northern pike in M:Cullom Lake. It was pork rind on a spinner hook that did the trick and Mr. Dietz, who, with his wife and daughter, has been at the John Dietz cottage at the lake for vacation, brought home his unusual catch just in time for Friday dinner. Twice Told Tales So far as can be ascertained, this is the first northern pike ever to be caught in McCullom Lake or in any nearby water and just how this big fellow got into the lake would be hard to explain. The 10th annual homecoming was observed in Ringwood on Aug. 14 when old friend and former resi dents exchanged greetings at its usual observance. J.V. Buckland is president, and Mrs. H.M. Stephen son, secretary, of the sponsoring Ringwood Homecoming Associa tion. Among the visitors were: Mrs. Libbie Allen and Robert McLean of Woodstock; Mrs. Maxwell Beth, Chicago; and Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Hayford of Crystal Lake. A junior college, a new feature at the local high school this year, will open Sept. 16 or Sept. 23, the exact date of which will be announced later. Regular high school classes will begin Sept. 3. Among new instruc tors are Miss Maurine Taylor of Elizabethtown, who will teach lan guages. She will have charge of the girls' athletics at the high school as well. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Aug. 23, 1945) Many McHenry folks, especially housewives, are pinching them selves to see if it's really true. Of course, we mean the lifting of bans which have been piling up through the last four years until for the first time in our history, the desires of the American public in almost ev ery line were curbed. Bringing joy to everyone was the announcement of the new point sys tem for the Navy and Marines. From 1,500,000 to 2,500,000 men within the next 18 montns will be demobilized. Gasoline rationing was probably the most welcome of the lifted bans. About the same time, fuel oil, oil stoves, canned fruits, vegetables, juices and other processed foods formerly re^uipmablue points were taken off the rationing list. An end to almost all rationing by Christmas except for sugar, butter and other fats was forecast this week. A new business to be known as Rothermel Electric Shop has been opened at the home of the propri etor Leo G. Rothermel, at 304 Riv erside Drive. Mr. Rothermel, a resi dent of McHenry for many years, has recently been honorably dis charged after three years of service in the army with the signal corps. This, plus 14 years experience in the electrical line in civilian life, as sures the ability of Mr. Rothermel in the varied lines of work in this business. TWENTY FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Aug. 25, 1960) McHenry hearts and pocketbooks opened up to the families of two children who drowned in the Fox River Sunday evening. The two young people were among four members of two families, migrant workers from Texas,-who were caught in the wake of high waves of passing boats on the river Sunday and drowned. An account has been set up at the McHenry State Bank for collecting donations to send the bodies of 12-year-old Maximiano Ramirez and his cousing, Celia Ma- lidonado, 16, to their native Texas for last rites and burial. Twenty-two teams of water fight ers, including mostly county fire department representatives, will participate before a crowd expected to number in the hundreds Aug. 28. McHenry hopes to gain the trophy won in 1957 and for eight years previous to that time. Representing Co. 1 in McHenry will be Glenn Peterson, George Rodenkirch, A1 Phannenstill, Larry Brusso and Harry Conway. On the Co. 2 team are Albert and Joel Adams, Harry and Norbert Smith and Harry Freund. Co. 3 will have as team members John Sulok, Harry Stand, For Your Information Anthony Kirsch, John Hose and Ted Winkel. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Aug. 24, 1975) A decisive victory for proponents of a new high school in the Johns- burg area came at the polls last Saturday. Of a total of 1,666 persons voting, 919 voted in favor and 729 were opposed to forming a new community unit school district com prising all of the territory of Johns- burg Consolidated District 12. By only a slightly smaller margin, the public approved issuing bonds in the amount of $3,033,000 for the purpose of purchasing and improving a school site and building and equip ping a senior high school building in the district. A 5-year-old was pronounced dead on arrival Friday at McHenry Hos pital after being found in a clothes dryer in his home with his legs hanging out of the open door. Police believe he had been apparently playing in the dryer. Thomas J. Rupp ATTORNEY AT LAW wishes to announce the relocation of his office to: 4302-B W.
