Nine people were killed and a vital oil installation was set ablaze in the latest fighting. Police said the 1 p.m. cease-fire deadline passed with little effect. Dozens of shells continued to crash into residential neighborhoods of east and west Beirut, inflicting heavy damage and some casualties. In the hours before the pact among the militia chiefs who com­ prise Lebanon's Cabinet, at least nine people were killed and 33 oth­ ers wounded in artillery and rifle battles between Christians and Mos­ lems in and around Bierut, police sources said. The latest casualties brought the totals to at least 285 killed and more than 925 wounded in Lebanon's worst factional violence in two years, the sources said. In the two hours following the deadline, shells crashed into Bei­ rut's only crude oil and refined pe­ troleum tanks in the Christian east Beirut waterfront neighborhood of Dora, setting one of the tanks ablaze and endangering others. Shells also hit Beirut Internation­ al Airport, the Christian Lebanese militia headquarters in east Beirut and the port, where a fire was reported. Prime Minister Rashid Karami, speaking after the Cabinet meeting, said the ministers agreed a greater Syrian role was needed, both in Bei­ rut and across Lebanon, to end the recurring battles between the rival militias. "While the Cabinet meeting was in session, we were informed of the cease-fire agreement of the Higher Security Committee and their deci­ sion to discuss the deployment of Syrian army observers on all con­ frontation fronts," Karami said in a statement. "We back and support these agreements and decisions and we call for the effective deployment of Syrian observers, because we feel that such a measure is essential for security not only in the Lebanese capital but all of Lebanon too."
