McHENRY PLAINDEALER Section A Wednesday, August28,1905 Pageli •ports Baseball fans everywhere appreciate Dodgers' Lasorda NEW YORK -- To get the proper perspective on this uncommon traf fic episode, it's important for you to understand one thing first. This wasn't just any parking lot, it was the one right outside Shea ;§}adium used by the Mets' person nel and a great many of their fans. SOne of the cars that pulled up in ont of the parking lot entrance efore Monday night's Dodgers- lets' game was carrying six men side. And when the attendant _Jit the customary $2 parking „ e, the driver showed him a pass. J "That's Tommy Lasorda right in 4$ck of me," said the driver, mo- aming directly behind him. %The attendant peered inside the &r. He was wearing one of those Mets' caps they sell at the ballpark you should've seen how he gjowed when he saw nobody was pulling his leg and the Dodger man ner actually was among the fecupants. •V'Tommy Lasorda! Tommy La- <$rda!" the attendant exclaimed, Jergetting all about collecting the «Qoney, which became an academic matter anyway because of the driv er's pass. "You gonna win tonight?" the at tendant inquired eagerly of Lasorda. "You bet," was the answer he got. "Whadd'ya think we came 3,000 miles for." "Atta boy," beamed the atten dant. "Before 1 let you go, though, you have to gimme your autograph for my grandson. He'll kill me if he finds out I saw you and didn't get it. Would you mind, please?" "With pleasure," Lasorda obliged, accepting a piece of paper from the man. "Just tell me your grandson's name." Slowly but surely, Tommy La sorda, who never could win a regu lar job pitching in the big leagues because he didn't have the kind of fastball that went with his excep tionally good curve, has become the Pied Piper of Baseball. Everybody all over the country knows Tommy Lasorda and at least half the population has met him because he's so accessible. He's the Man of the People, addressing them everywhere and anywhere from such diverse places as air force and military bases to inner city prisons. Lasorda is this generation's Billy Sunday, and if you don't know who he was, ask your father. The ener getic, perpetually outgoing Dodger manager is Elmer Gantry in base ball flannels and everywhere he goes he preaches the same thing: the only color he recognizes is Dodger blue. For him, being with them is the same as being in heaven on earth. Hey, he really believes it. Milton Richman UPI sports editor "Why shouldn't I love the Dodg ers? Look at all they've done for me." True enough, but it hasn't been all one way. Look at all Lasorda has done for the Dodgers in the nine years he has managed them. His teams have won four division cham pionships, three pennants and one World Series championship, and his current club, with a 7 te-game lead, looks on the way to another division title at very least. By now, Lasorda is liberally rec ognized for all the good will he generates for the Dodgers. Not rec ognized nearly as much is his mana gerial ability. It's good enough so he has to get some serious consider ation as the National League Man ager of the Year. Especially if the Dodgers come on to take it all. What stamps Lasorda as unique among managers is the relation ships he maintains with so many of his former players. All managers have players they stay in touch with UPI photo Tom Padorek (left) chats with Los Angeles manager Tom Lasorda prior to Monday night's game in Shea Stadium. Bobby Valentine, for example, played for Lasorda in the minors and in the Dominican Republic. Val entine had a job he liked, coaching third base for the Mets when the season started, but before he took the Texas Rangers' job in May, he called Lasorda asking for his advice and Lasorda gave it to him. "My father had a saying," La sorda told him. "'When the fruit is ripe, you pick it. Otherwise, if you wait, it falls to the ground.'" Valentine understood perfectly and took the Rangers' job. A bit later this season, the Dodg ers had an off day in Houston. The Rangers were home that night against the Twins and Lasorda thought he'd like to see some of his "old boys." He and Steve Brener got on a plane to Dallas and after they had lunch with former Dodgers Charlie Hough, Burt Hooton, Dave Stewart and Valentine, they went to the game that night and watched the Twins beat the Rangers. "Offensively, you managed a good game," Lasorda said to Valen tine when they all had a late dinner that night. "Defensively, you left your pitcher in a couple of batters too long." Ex-Dodgers like Bill Buckner with the Red Sox and Rick Rhoden with the Pirates sometimes call La sorda. And if they don't call him, he'll call them. "Tommy was a father figure to me when I played in the Dodger organization and he's still that way," says Joe Ferguson, who used to catch and play the outfield for the Dodgers and now scouts for them from the press box. "When I couldn't find a place to stay, I lived at Tommy's house. One time when I was still playing, he and I really got into it because he thought I should've caught a fly ball that I didn't. The big argument we had made all the papers. What ev erybody didn't know was that when it was all over and everybody else ipf? Tommy and I went out to din ner together." The Dodgers beat the Mets 6-1 Monday night and that had to make that parking lot attendant happy. When Lasorda got back to his hotel room, he had a mountain of telephone messages. One of them was from Bobby Valentine calling from Kansas City.
