The Nail advanced thanks to a 2-0 sweep of Gambler West in the West­ ern Division finals, while the Fox Hole made the finals after a 2-1 series win over Jack's Snack Shop- McHenry Oil. The two survivors will meet in a doubleheader Wednesday night, and then resume the best-of-series next Wednesday. The two squads split a pair of games during the regular season. In Monday's first game, the Nail scored in every inning but one, banging out 19 hits en route to a 16- 10 win over Gambler West. Rusty Nail scored four in the top of the first and never was headed off. Don Bentz blasted a three-run homer to right field to stake the Nail to an early advantage. The Nail scored three more in the sec­ ond, and then Bentz led the third inning off with a deep solo blast to centerfield, making it 8-3, Nail. After Gambler closed to 8-5 with solo runs in the third and fourth, Bill Meyers put the icing on the proverbial cake with a two-run homer to left center after Rick Wa- kitsch had led off the inning with a triple. Gambler rallied in the seventh from a 16-6 deficit with a four-run seventh inning. Jim Frantz and John DeCicco each had RBI hits, while Tim Frantz ripped a two-run single. With two on and two out, Dave Sundby made a fine running catch to rob Jerry Brodin of an extra base hit. John Meyers had three hits and three runs scored for the winners. Wakitsch also had three hits, knock­ ing in two runs. Doug Freund, Bill Meyers, Bentz, Randy Thiel, A1 Stilling and Sundby all chipped in two hits apiece. Bentz had four RBI and Bill Meyers and Freund three apiece. For Gambler, Jim Frantz had a perfect 4-for-4 night, scoring four runs. Tim Frantz had three hits and four RBI. Jim Althoff, Brodin, Tony Huemann, Scott Ledster and Phil Oeffling had two hits each. Fox Hole and Jack's then squared off in the rubber game of their best- of-three set, and what appeared to be a closely-matched duel turned into a rout, Fox Hole winning easily, 16-4. The winners scored all the runs they would need in the second in­ ning, as six FHT runners touched home plate. Mark Vogt and Kurt Valentin led the inning off with doubles. Jim Yaworski followed with an RBI sin­ gle, Mark Schultz was next to re­ spond, with an RBI triple, Vinnie Freund then singled in a run, fol­ lowed by base hits off the bats of Doc Fowler and Jeff Meyers. Wayne Hiller then unleashed a two- run double to put the cap on the inning. Fox Hole made it 12-0 with a six- run fourth, the big blow a two-run double by Vogt. Jack's tried to make a game of it in the fourth on RBI from Bob Mi- chels, Mark Jess, John Oeffling and Dan McAuliffe, but it wasn't enough, as the Fox Hole rolled to the East title. Vogt and Schultz had three hits apiece for the winners, while Hiller had two hits and three RBI. Well, not exactly. The Warriors, who open their sea­ son Thursday on the road against Antioch, suffered through a lean year in 1984, and will probably have to do the same this season. The reason? Inexperience. "We had a very young team last year, and we're still going with a young team this year," said Cuda, entering his 35th as the McHenry golf mentor. The Warriors' top golfer in 1984, Brian Smith, has since graduated, but Cuda will have no such concerns after this season ends. There are no seniors on the '85 squad. "We've got 26 out all together," Cuda said, "and that's a pretty good number. About 10 of those are freshmen." The Warriors were 1-9 a year ago. Any high hopes for some huge im­ provement upon that mark, Coach? "We don't have any expectations, really," answered Cuda. "We just want to improve over last year, and keep on playing better and better. All we can really expect is to im­ prove our play. We only have two juniors, and we're going with most­ ly all underclassmen. "Crystal Lake Central looks good, and South is always pretty good, too in the (Fox Valley) conference. We just want to work on certain things this year, and next year we could come through and be contenders. I saw that Central shot 167 Monday in a match. We can shoot that well if some of these kids come through," Cuda said. Cuda will count on juniors Chris By Herald News Service JANESVILLE, Wis. -- McHenry's Hiller & Hamm 12" softball team successfully defended its Class B Wisconsin State Championship recent­ ly, with a stellar performance at the Janesville tournament. Hiller & Hamm started out the event by defeating Lannyngs from Beloit, Wis., scoring in every inning but the sixth. Bob Zeller led the way with four hits, while Jeff Meyers, John Meyers, Mike Gertz, Jim Yaworski and Ray Thelen contributed three hits apiece. The second game of the tourney saw H & H roll to a 12-0 romp over Mitchell Field of South Milwaukee. The game started slowly for the loclas, but the runs started to come across. Jeff Meyers continued his hot hitting, rapping three hits including a double and triple. Don Bentz, Jim Yaworski and Kurt Valentin added two hits apiece. Coming back on the tournament's final day, H & H knew that winning three games would win them their second straight state tourney. With I that in mind, Hiller & Hamm rolled to an impressive 14-2 win over Heebee Jeebee's out of Menomenee Falls, Wis. The winners scored in every inning, thus eliminating their third straight opponent by the 12-run rule. Jeff Meyers banged out four more hits, while Gertz, Bill Meyers and Zeller all had three each. Bill Meyers ripped two doubles. The fourth game was for the championship of the winner's bracket, and the H & H opponent was Lewie's of Milwaukee. It was a close one throughout, with Hiller & Hamm finding themselves on the short end of a 5-3 score entering the bottom of the sixth. But, the bats again came out smoking for the eventual champs, as they scored six runs to win easily, 11-5. John Meyers, Gertz, Yaworski, Kenny Bottari, Valentin and Mark Hiller all helped out the offense with two hits apiece. Bill Meyers lashed linksters hope toward top Howerton and Scott Miller, his only returning letterwinners, and a bevy of solid, yet inconsistent, freshmen and sophomores. Cuda said it's only a matter of time before McHenry golf returns to its old, winning form. t "The sophomore class looks pret­ ty good," he said. "They could be real good in the future. They've shown great improvement all the way along. "We lost the country club mem­ bership. The kids just aren't mem­ bers anymore. But (McHenry Coun­ try Club professional) Don Habjan has been doing a good job with the junior program, and there are some good 7th and 8th graders coming up. FVC seeks chairperson By Herald sports staff McHENRY - If you like sports, and consider yourself an organized person, there might be a job for you. The Fox Valley Conference is seeking a Girls' Sports Assign­ ment Chairperson, a job which begins in the fall. The job, which entails assign­ ing officials for all girls' sports in the FVC, was previously done by one person, who also handled the capacity in boys' sports. Therefore, this paid position is a newly-created one. The assignments for the 1985- 86 season have already been made. Thus, the position would require scheduling for the 86-87 school year. Cheers came back with three of their own to make it 5-3 after one, and then scored a solo tally in the second to close to 5-4. But the champs rallied for four in the fourth to take a 9-4 advantage. The two teams traded runs before Cheers made it 10^9 with a big fifth inning, before Hiller & Hamm made it 11-9 with a lone score in the sixth. Into the bottom of the seventh, the locals still led 11-9, and got two qucik outs. The next two batters reach to bring the winning run to the plate. The batter hit a long fly ball to left which Zeller nabbed on the warning track to give Hiller & hamm the victory and the championship. Bottari, Gertz and Jeff Meyers had three hits apiece, Gertz collecting a double and a triple. Gertz went 13-for-17 in the tournament, and added some fine defensive plays in right field, allowing him to be unanimously voted as the event's most valuable player. Hiller & Hamm is comprised of players from the McHenry-Johnsburg area. They-are: Don Bentz, Ken Bottari, Tom Fowler, Mike Gertz, Mark Hiller, Bill Meyers, Jeff Meyers, John Meyers, Joe Meyers, Ray Thelen, Kurt Valentin, Rick Wakitsch, Jim Yaworski and Bob Zeller. The team's sponsors are Robert Hamm and Dick Hiller. Next stop for the Wisconsin State Class B Champions is the Class B Central States Division Nationals this weekend.
