Storms over Gulf Coast By United Press International Scattered showers and thunder­ storms Wednesday moved along the Gulf Coast and southern Atlantic Coast while a tropical depression north of Cuba headed for the Gulf of Mexico. Showers and thunderstorms also dotted western New York state, the northern and central Rockies, the northern Plains and the upper Mis­ sissippi Valley. At Corpus Christi, Texas, nearly 1 inch of rain fell and Columbia, S.C., had about half an inch of rain. A disorganized tropical depres­ sion was centered along the north coast of central Cuba, about 250 miles southeast of Key West, Fla. A storm watch has been posted for parts of the Bahamas. The depression was moving west northwest at 30 mph and was ex­ pected to move into the southeast Gulf of Mexico Wednesday night. Conditions favor strengthening and the system could become a storm by Wednesday afternoon or evening, the National Weather Ser­ vice said. The depression would be­ come Tropical Storm Elena if its sustained winds reach 39 mph. Early-morning temperatures were in the middle 40s and 50s across the northern tier of states. The Northeast had lows in the upper 50s and 60s. The southern states had lows mostly in the upper 60s and 70s. The temperature at Astoria, Ore., Illinois temperatures dipped to 42 degrees tying the re­ cord low set in 1984. The lowest temperature reported Wednesday was 37 degrees at Hibbing, Minn.
