Ladies' Golf The concluding event of the month of August for the women of McHenry Country Club was a non- winners Net Tournament, wherein those who hadnot previously won a tournament were eligible. In Class A, Joanie Buss won with a net 71. In Class B, it was Carol Barnicle with net 70, in Class C, Ursula Cisliak with 78 and in Class D, Kathy Haugen with 76. Low putts went to Alvina Yopp in Class A with 29 roll-ins, Evie Castle In Class B with 28, Bernice Dolce in Class C with 29 and Betty Wayman in D with 32. Fran Weyland and Betty Rode each birdied 8. Due to a little side bet, Fran had to buy Joanie Buss a glass of bubbly because of sinking the pitt. That's how it goes some times. Arlette Cable's birdie on 9 had feathers attached as she caught one of the ducks that permanently reside in the area. The SPCA may be investigating. The only chip-ins reported were executed by Kather- ine Bolger on 13 and Magda Hen- hapl on 17. A short note from the Nifty Niners shows that Bea Pond won the event in Flight A while Beth Dees won in Flight B. To wind up their season, the Nifties held an informal lun cheon to exchange golf tidbits -- such a nice social group. Due to the Labor Day vacation, no golf is scheduled for the coming week. However, an ABCD point tournament is scheduled for Sept. 10, followed by an exchange day with Turnberry on Sept. 13. The conclusion of the season will be a Beat the Pro event on Sept. 17 and that should make for... Happy Golfing! Liz. Bears (Continued from page 13) regular season and won the NFC Central. Although Buffalo is coming off a miserable 1984 campaign and has yet to win in the pre-season, Ditka has respect for the Bills. "It is a different team than one year ago," Ditka said. '-'They gave Cleveland all they could handle one week ago." However, Chicago's offense, sus pect at times duriqg last season, has come under fire again in the pre-season. The Bears have been able to manage only two touch downs in three games in losing to St. Louis, Indianapolis and the Cowboys. "We've got to start putting some points on the board," Ditka said. "I don't care if you're the best defen sive team in the world, you're not going to win many games scoring 13 points. It's all over. Our goal is to score 24 or 25 points. It's time for us to say, Hey, let's go for it.'" Chicago's No. 1 quarterback, Jim McMahon, has yet to throw for a touchdown. But he also hasn't had superstar running back Walter Pay- ton at his side for most of the pre season as Payton has been used sparingly in the exhibition season. The Bills alternated Joe Dufek anu ex-Ram Vince Ferragamo in last week's loss to Cleveland. Sec ond-year running back Greg Bell turned to duty last week after ing hampered with a hamstring pull earlier in August. While both teams try to get their offences in gear, the defenses of the two ciubs are on opposite sides of the NFL spectrum. Win the LeBaron G.T.S. on display at all Chicago White Sox home games. The Trojans of Otto Zeman are an independent. In previous years they were members of the Des Plaines Valley Conference. " With the merging of the two Mocton schools, East and West, and dropping enrollment at R-B, the Trojans are playing it by ear this season, looking to hook up with a conference in the future. The Warriors put on a pretty good show last Friday night at their Introduction Night. They have a good crop of receivers in Curt Justen and Mike Schultz, running backs Jim Shaver and Dana Pitel and signal-caller Mark Jinga. The line is anchored by j>ivotman Jim Owens. If the Warriors worked out the bug in the offensive line this week, things could be intersting at McCracken Friday. / ^ Schlender is anxious for the first game. Like an^ coach, he would like to see his team with some outside competition to get ready for the Fox Valley Conference season. Fifteen lettermen are returning to the Warrior squad, and with some promising juniors on the squad, Schlender is hoping to surprise some people this season. ^ There are no easy pickings on the Warrior schedule this season, so every week is going to be a test for Schlender and his crew. We, along with all you Warrior fans, hope they get off on the right foot Friday with a win over R- B. _ Talk about a smiling face. Coach Mike Shanahan has a grin from ear to ear these days. The popular swimming coach has 38 candidates out for his girls swim team, by far the largest turnout in school history. What is most pleasing to Shanahan is that there are 11 age-group swimmers from the summer team. I guess that City Recreation Director Pete Merkel should also take a bow because of the city's summer program. It is now going to pay off on the' high school level. „ Shanahan says: "This should be our best team ever. We have some depth in events that we did not have before." Nine returning lettermen return: Seniors Laura Clewis, Jennifer Hiller and Erin Conway. Junior returning are Colleem Samen, Mary Geske and Debbie Holtz. Sophomores are Tracy Hoffman, Shannon Brown and Kim Kull. Hoffman is returning conference^ champ in two events she won as a freshman. Geske is the varsity record holder in the breaststroke. The girls open their season at the Palatine Fremd Invitational next Saturday. I had the opportunity to attend the S.I.H. retirement party several weekends ago. Met at least five members of the 1925 Warrior basketball team, and we should all hope that we look as good as they do when we On the Sideline Dick Rabbitt reach their age. S.I.H. and his bride (one of my favorite persons) received many accolades for his 50 years of writing for the Plaindealer. Had a nice card from a member of that team, an old friend and a real party-goer, Zeke Bacon from Tuscon. Zeke and his wife were present, and it looks as if the Sun Belt agrees with both of them. Gave Zeke a copy of a ball game in which he scored 21 of the Warriors' 25 points in a game against Marengo. Then he had the gall to ask me why I called him a ball hog. Great people and we wish them the best of health and good golfing. It is again that time of the year when we must match out wits with our sports editor in the old crystal ball game. Last year, the rookie did a fine job, and I barely nosed him out for the season. But as he will find out, age will get to you in his picks.
