In 19771 it started an annual awards program to recognize and promote excellence in motorcy cle safety. The M.S.F. recently announced its 1984 award recipients with Illinois being a major winner. For the third time (only one other state, Wisconsin, has won t h i s a w a r d t h r e e times) since the start of the M.S.F. Your life will be a lot easier if you do the opening and closing a u t o m a t i c a l l y , especially from the comfort of your car. Comsumer Reports' engineers recently tested 18 automatic garagedoor openers, ranging from $100 to $255. All are designed t o f i t d o o r s w i t h tracks. Most can also b e i n s t a l l e d o n trackless doors. To open and shut the garage door as well as turn on a built-in garage light, you use either a switch on the garage wall or a small radio transmitter in your car The radio transmitter sends a coded signal to a r e c e i v e r i n t h e o p e n e r ' s m o t o r housing. At one time only a f e w c o d e s w e r e available and they were pre-selected at the factory, Now, just about all models allow you to (rick your own code. With the models tested, possible codes ranged from 256 choices ot more than 19,000, depending on .the number and type of s w i t c h e s o n t h e t r a n s m i t t e r a n d receiver. Most manufacturers o f f e r u n i t s w i t h various horsepowers ( f r o m V 4 t o M > horsepower). But the engineers found that increased horsepower didn't improve an opener's performance on a properly balanced door. Most of the models tested used a bicycle- t y p e c h a i n a n d sprocket to raise and lower the door. Two models used a narrow plastic strap instead of a chain. A third type used a worm-screw drive. Despite the differences in design, no drive type was found to be inherently superior to the others. All of the openers t e s t e d w o r k e d satisfactorily under n o r m a l circumstances. Some were slightly faster than others -- but by only a .couple of seconds. So choosing an opener should be based more on extra features and price than on brands or models. The Norelco Genie G S 9 4 0 , a % - horsepower, feature- laden opener, was one o f t h e s p e e d i e s t m o d e l s t e s t e d . However, at $255, that model was expensive. The Moore-O-Matic 838 would also be a good choice. It was quiet and just as fast as the Norelco. Although the Moore- O-Matic contained fewer features than the top-rated Norelco, at about $200, it was a lot less expensive. The garage-door openers tested all e a r n e d t h e U n d e r w i r t e r s Laboratories Safety seal. To gel that seal, a n o p e n e r m u s t automatically reverse i f t h e d o o r h i t s s o m e t h i n g w h i l e descending. G a r a g e - d o o r openers sold since mid-1982, are supposed to reverse if they can't make the door go all the way down within 30 seconds. All the tested models did just that. Such safety measures are important. Since 1981, more than a score of children have b e e n t r a p p e d a n d killed while racing to beat a closing garage door, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. N e v e r t h e l e s s , openers still should be used with care. Make sure that the controls -- i n c l u d i n g t h e transmitters -- are kept out of the reach of children. And it's a g o o d p r a c t i c e t o operate the door only when you can see it.
