John Wayne. 1933. ((tuesday)) 9/3/85 Constanc* McCashin, who plays Laura Avery on CBS'a "Knot* Landing." says there's one simple reason why her Thursday night series has gathered such a solid following. "Our show Is more grounded in reality than others of the genre," Miss McCashin says. The oth ers she refers to indude "Dallas." which was crest ed by David Jacobs and produced by Lorimar -- just like "Knots Landing." In fact. Larry Hagman came to the rescue of "Knots Landing" by mak ing several appearances as J.R. when the show was struggling to establish it self several seasons ago. But don't look for oT J.R. to be traveling from the Big D to the "Knots Land ing" locale this season. "There's no need for the J.R. crossover now that Our ratings are so good," Miss McCashin says. Miss McCashin admits that one reason for the show's slow start may have been too many issue- oriented episodes during its first two seasons. But "Knots Landing" seems to have settled comfortably into its own story niche since then. "Now." Miss McCashin says, "if the people want sex, well, we must give it to them." ACCENT-UATE THE POSITIVE -- "I don't know what it is about an English accent," Christo pher Hewett says, "but I always end up playing the butler." Wl Growing Years © (3$ © Mate SoosfeoM! Hewett was Herve VUle- chaize's replacement dur ing the last season of "Fantasy Island" (on which he played a butler) after Aaron Spelling saw him (playing a butler) in the TV movie "Masaereti and the Brain." Although Hewett ap peared on the series only one year, it gave him the prime-time exposure he previously lacked. His only other foray in series television had been the short-lived "Ivan the Terrible" in 1976."lt was terrible," says Hewett of the sitcom, which only ran for three weeks. Hewett's current role, as the title character in ABC's "Mr. Belvedere," may mean playing the butler again, but it has given him his best exposure so far. Hewett still prefers the ater, however, where one simply steps on-stage and plays the role. "You don't gut paid for acting on TV" Hewett says, "you ge. paid for waiting." © 1985 Computes SUMMER RENTAL (PG-Psramount) Starring John Candy, Richard Cranna, Karen Austin. * + Vi* By J.T. YURKO The pairing of John Candy with Carl Reiner is a natural. Their careers may be separat ed by several decades, but they had similar beginnings. Candy's apprenticeship with 'Chicago's Second City come dy troupe parallels Reiner's early work with Sid Caesar and Mel Brooks on "Your Show of Shows." Reiner went on to create the legendary "Dick Van Dyke Shop" and has, more recent ly, teamed with Steve Martin for lour films. Candy's movie efforts in clude supporting roles in "Splash" and "Brews* -'s Millions" -- and a sma jart in "National Lampoon's Vacation." Actually, "National Lam poon's Vacation" is what "Summer Rental" starts out to be. Substitute John Candy for Chevy Chase. Karen Aus tin for Beverly D'Angeio. and you have a virtual remake -- tor the first 30 minutes or so. anyway. But this film makes an im portant break with National Lampoon's style of film mak ing -- by including something called a plot. (It must be the Carl Reiner "old school" influ ence.) What unfolds ii a rather warm and almost tender fam ily tale that includes some clever situations and colorful characters. The best of the characters is Rip Torn, who plays a mod ern-day buccaneer in pirate hat and dress, who greets all who come aboard his ship- turned-restaurant with an "Avast me hearties" and a wave of the hook. Torn could easily have descended into silliness with such an appari tion, but he plays it almost straight, and turns in a de lightful characterization. The villain of the piece is Richard C snnai an arrogant yacht racti* who does every thing he can to spoil Candy's vacation. But Candy and fam ily team up wilh Torn and oth er members of his motley crew to give Crenna a run for his money. The story eventually turns into a nautical version of "Rocky." but Candy is a lov able lug. Torn is just great, and Reiner gets the most out of each situation. At the risk of damning with faint praise, a person In search ol a summer movie rental could do a whole lot worse. © less Compotoo
