Then they showed her his picture. Her leading man was a giant ape, and the movie was "King Kong," the 1933 classic that has developed a devoted cult following over the years. Some fans have even memorized the entire film. ("Watch," they'll tell you. "He's about to flick his tail.") The plot is basic. Two explorers (Bruce Cabot and Robert Armstrong) discover a giant woman-eating ape (Kong, of course) on a remote tropical island, capture him with the help of a star (Miss Wray), and bring the beast to the United States. Kong quickly escapes, however, and goes looking for Miss Wray, with whom he has, after a fashion, fatt en in love. The climax, in which Kong stands atop the Empire State Building with a screaming Miss Wray clutched tightly in fist, is hard to forget. "King Kong" is considerably less realistic than many of the "monster on the loose" flicks that have fol lowed in its wake, but its cardboardish sets may be par tially responsible for its success, giving it a dreamlike quality and making jt easier- for those -looking for There aren't any ex posed shoulders or gyrat ing silhouettes when Jen nifer Beais ("Flashdance") plays the title role in "Cin derella." which opens the ne» season of "Faerie Tale Theatre." Sept. 2 and 7 on Showtime. Miss Beais is sweet and demure as the put-upon stepdaughter, and her co- star. Matthew Broderick. is pleasant and innocent as the prince who rescues her in the end. Of course, it's ready the fairy godmother (Jean Sta- pleton) who rescues Cin derella from servitude to her nasty stepsisters (Edie McCiurg and Jane Alden) and witch of a stepmother (Eve Arden). In fact, the fairy godmother turns a forldrn Cinderella into such a sparkling beauty that even the king (James Noble) thinks his son has good taste. "Cinderella" is a clever combination of fairy-tale magic and adult tongue- in-cheek humor. It works beautifully. For more adventure and courtly romance, there's "The Prisoner of Zenda" on the Arts & Entertain ment Network. "Zenda" is the classic turn-of-the-century story of an aristocratic English man who finds himself doubling as the King of Ruritania because of simi lar looks. The pressures mount when the English- >:• r',m t v* « y 1 Miss Beais and Broderick man (played by Malcolm Sinclair) begins to like be ing king a little too much -- and begins to like the princess (Victoria Wicks), to whom the real King is engaged, even more. "Zenda" is a six-part se ries, beginning Sept. 2. Also starring are John Woodvine (Ralph from "Nicholas Nickleby") and George Irving. • Parent alert: "Too Smart for Strangers," a musical special on person al safety aimed at children, airs Sept. 7 on the Disney Channel and is well worth watching. You should watch this program with your chil dren. This can be a fright ening subject for them, even when Winnie the Pooh and the gang at Pooh Corner are doing the talking. There'll be a 20-minute discussion with child abuse experts at the end of the program to give par- «?t* totoV Rdvjce.,. „ 1 itr.jf • a
