Hurricane warnings were no long er in effect along the central Gulf Coast and winds had dropped to 60 mph.^ At 3 p.m. EDT the storm was :entered 85 miles north-northwest if New Orleans and moving west northwest at 15 mph. Scattered thunderstorms redeveloped across parts of east Florida and central Georgia in the wake of Hurricane Elena. The season's fourth hurricane claimed at least two lives and in jured 31 people -- all in Florida -- while wandering the Gulf of Mexico for three days before turning on the Mississippi coast. One iwister struck a packed storm'shelter in Gulfport, injuring one person, and another tore into an evacuation center at Central Ele mentary School in Gulfport, sending 380 residents fleeing. The roof of a Biloxi senior citizens center also was smashed by a torna do and paramedics crawled through the rubble To rescue about 200 elder ly people inside. Elsewhere, across the nation, searing heat blanketed the southern Plains with temperatures in the up per 90s and above 100. It was 103 degrees at Bergstrom Air Force Base, Texas. Heat stress advisories were issued throughout the region. Showers and thunderstorms rum bled across North Dakota, Minneso ta and western^ViSconsin. PROFESSIONAL & SERVICE JACK WALSH, AGENT EARL R.
