Pag* 4 McHENRY PLAINDEALER S«ctionA Wednesday, S#pt«mb«r 4, IMS; Community Large crowd enjoys thrilling boat races 5, FIFTY YEA^S AGO (Taken from the files of Sept 1935) A crowd estimated at 5,000 people witnessed the boat races on the Fox River at McHenry on Labor Day with plenty of thrills provided by the speedy and noisy little outboards as they bobbed over the waves threat ening to throw their pilots into the water at any moment, and the more dignified inboard craft which, how ever, were not outdone for speed. Twice Told Miss Rita Kelly, piloting her own boat, the "Rita K," had the narrow escape of the day, fortunately escap ing serious injury as she was thrown into the water and her boat sunk as it collided with Dr. Brunswick's boat at the bouy at the south end of the course. Winners in the various events of the day included Floyd Evans, Hans Groemer, P.W. Seyl, H. Schroeder, Joe Micheleini, John Garter and R. DeLos Clow, Also, Jos. Hayes, George Kramer, M. Ernst, J. Brunsfield and H. Felz. Heavy motor traffic streaming over the highways Monday evening gave evidence that the Labor Day series of showers could not prevent enjoyment of the holiday.
